Clothes Show Live

This is probably the only trade show I will write about and it has this kind of story behind it. Well basically I thought I copied and pasted a link to a trade show, but incidentally I copied the three words “clothes show live” and since I’m using Firefox it took me to www.clothesshowlive.com and that is how I found out about this celebrity filled, star studded trade show in this coming December.

Clothes Show Live breaks down exhibitors into different zones as follows-

  • Blue Zone- which is high street chic and one-off vintage pieces. For example names like Juicy Couture, or Paul Frank ring a bell
  • Purple Zone- is more for the urban streetwear shopper. Brands include TopShop, Illustrated People and Lazy Oaf
  • Pink Zone- is a mix of the latest in beauty products from top names such as Maybelline New York, Bourjois, Rimmel London, and Fake Bake
  • Black Zone- this is for the fashion conscience and is dedicated to the evergrowing trend of eco-friendly and ethical fashion

Brian New High Mart

I’ve been reading a lot about new pop up retail store concepts. Basically a moving, collapsible retail store that is nothing more than a few walls and of course a cash register. The UK and Japan were some of the first to adopt this concept and the United States is following suit with their own pop up retail store concept. I could see it working wonders for smaller designers to just rent out space on a busy street and display their designs for the passing public and with good targeting and marketing you could build the awareness of your clothing company.

Just recently in Chinatown, Los Angeles a new store called New High (M) art opened by Miho Ikeda a former stylist and the creative director for other brands. The store is a 300 foot pop up retail space that is renting out the space to various designers and artist to showcase their clothing or wares to passing consumers with one-off pieces and full collections for a selected time slot.

This is another one of those quick definitions, but you should still know this and it is a very important term. Stock on Hand refers to what stock a retailer has on hand at the store ready to sell…pretty simple. Your job as a designer is to make sure when they get a low amount of stock on hand you replenish those fast sellers before their gone.

Bangladesh Apparel & Textile Exposition (BATEXPO) is the annual trade show of the Bangladesh’s garment industry and one of the largest apparel expositions in the Asia-Pacific.

I think this trade show would be more attractive to anyone who would do most of their retail business within Bangladesh…because I mean who in America would want “Made in Bangladesh” on the tag of most of their garments. Especially with consumers now being more aware and conscious of where clothing they purchase originated and the “Made in USA” label is more attractive and being that is what this show promotes garments that bare the “Made in Bangladesh” tag.

At this edition of BATEXPO the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, as the Chief Guest, will inaugurate the BATEXPO’2007 at Hotel Pan Pacific Sonargaon in Dhaka.

Exhibitors will be showing ready made and knitted wear, textile, yarns, accessories and auxiliary materials for tailoring, Companies offering services, software and equipment.

The next show date is on November 15-17, 2007 at Hotel Pan Pacific Sonargaon, in Dhaka, Dhaka Bangladesh.

Marc Jacobs
Marc Jacobs was born in New York City April 9, 1963. Marc Jacobs always had fashion in his heart considering he went to the high school of Art and Design instead of general public school like most teenagers.

Shortly after graduating from high school Marc attended Parsons School of design and this is where his career really started to take form. While attending college Marc Jacobs designed his first collection which was commissioned and sold by Barbara Weiser under the label ‘Marc Jacobs for Marc and Barbara’.

While at Parsons Marc received some of the schools highest honors including: The Perry Ellis Gold Thimble award, The Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble, and Design Student of the Year. Following his studies at the Parsons School of Design, he became prominent on the fashion scene when he designed a “grunge” collection for Perry Ellis, leading to his immediate dismissal.

Daily Definition of Seam

Posted by: Fashion06 in Daily Definition |

I know any of you that have had any type of sewing class or experience with sewing are familiar with a seam. A seam is basically where two pieces of fabric meet or are joined together….not very complicated huh?

There are many different types of seams used in garment construction and just for decoration purposes by some designers here are some of the different types I have found more commonly used:

Plain Flat Seam: Most flat seams can be finished with a serger which will place a looping stitch on the underside to keep it from unraveling.

Flat Seam

Flat Felled Seam or Simulated: It is a more durable seam mostly seen on jeans where a stronger seam is needed to hold the fabric together. It has a double row of stitching as you can see as opposed to the plain seam.

Flat Felled Seam

French Seams: Used on mostly on delicate fabrics and it is more time consuming to perform this type of seam. A seam is sewn on the right side of the fabric and then the right sides are placed together and another line is stitched over in the process enclosing the other seam.

This is the inspiration post for today. I know we all dream of the day our brand is purchased for millions…maybe even billions if you reach the iconic status of Ralph Lauren or a Tommy Hilfiger.

We wrote about Artful Dodger and the rumor that they were to be acquired by Iconix Brand and Jay-Z here. Iconix has moved forward and made the purchase for $15 million in a all cash transaction. The deal was part of their new established joint venture Scion, LLC, from its former owner Sovereign State LLC. Scion has entered into a multi-year license with Signature Apparel Group for Artful Dodger men?s and women?s sportswear.

Many don’t know, but Artful Dodger is designed by Scott Langton who designs another self-named brand that resembles Artful Dodger. It is less street/urban inspired and has a more fitted silhouette than its brother Artful Dodger.
