The Jeans Show Moscow

The Jeans Show is all about giving Russian wholesalers and retailers a chance to network while celebrating the vast denim industry. Also allowing the retailers to get familiar with the latest trends within the active wear industry.

From the reviews and descriptions I read it seems to be more of a celebration for the creation of denim and the many possibilities that denim has created for the fashion industry as a whole and they exercise that option by putting together a show going where denim will probably never go in the mainstream according to the description, but I could be wrong.

The next Jeans Show will be held in Moscow, Russia on January 30, through February 1, 2008 at the Expocentr’ Krasnaya Presnya Fairgrounds.

I thought this was a great question from the Dobizo Answers page. Even though it is a basic question it is still very confusing when you’re starting to design your first garments, but I think this question refers to tops more than anything else.

9th CC asks:

“I did research all over the place and I really am lost when it comes to finding a source that teaches the designer how to indicate where the design is to be placed on the garment as far as measurments are concerned. Trust me I know you hate laziness but I honestly cant find something in Laymens.

Csup Clothing”

Well I could definitely relate to this problem because I actually remember getting some of my first season shirts/hoodies designed and trying to determine the size/placement variations for the different sizes. Mostly because I had a range of sizes from m-4xl and where a design would sit/look on a medium shirt might not be suitable for a 4x-Large shirt.

Last week at the Jacob Javits Center where over a record crowd of 18,000 retailers gathered to discuss none other than the retail industry everyone in attendance had one thing on there mind…recession. Because that is what the retail industry as a whole has been experiencing for the last few months and after the long discussion many retailers and colleagues had last week it isn’t looking to get any prettier for at least six months more within the year.

The retail industry this year is looking to post the slowest gain in five years growing only 3.5 percent. According to analyst and economist the slowing economy and decrease in consumer spending is due to high energy cost and the fallout from the housing slump, sluggish employment and income growth all play an integral part in the recession taking place amongst the retail industry.

Specifically for the apparel industry consumers just seem to not be as excited about what retailers have to offer and with that said most fashion retailers can expect modest to average gains in the apparel sector unless some major trend or fashion “must have” emerges.

I know some of these daily definition probably remind you of some rather “duh” moments, but some of these definitions are ones most don’t know no matter how simple it may seem to some readers and since this site is about starting from scratch we try to cover all basis and eventually we will…I’m in it for the long haul.

Bleeding is usually associated with coloured clothing losing its color when in contact with liquid usually hot liquids. (Think about when washing colored clothes/cold water and alike colors) Also part of the reason for pre-washing textiles so that the percentage of color loss and shrinkage is decreased once the final product is in the hand of the consumers. Most will make note of it on the apparel tag if it is a pre-washed garment or if you can expect a certain percentage of shrinkage and may need to buy a size up.

Shop-Bellari

This is a combination of Global Fashion Network Member of the Week and a great article topic because Shop Bellari came up with the idea, which I personally think makes for a great discussion.

Basically a member asked why they chose their company name and logo. Many do it for different reasons from family references to the logo resembling something or just a complete custom logo from a sketch.

I personally chose my company name after thinking about what I wanted my company to “be” or represent. Scout Union means Superior Clothing Original Urban Taste. Really I wanted it to represent the best and that is also why the logo is black and gold which are royalty colors. Every garment comes with the blk/gold patch for authenticity of original Scout Union Apparel and it is incorporated into most of the designs.

Here are some of the questions I would like to know about your company and logo: (You can include a logo link or picture in your comment if you like)

As the fight against counterfeiters and bootleggers continue there has been another major bust with boosters of luxury branded clothing.

Finally they were indicted then arrested after pushing more than 300,000 pieces of luxury branded counterfeit apparel ranging from handbags and wallets, with an estimated value surpassing the $100 million mark. As suspected the brands were constructed in China and this is definitely a concern brought to attention before by the US for China to increase their surveillance and border control on counterfeit goods, but it still continues to be one of the leading exporters/manufacturers of the faulty goods.

The two of the involved parties in the luxury counterfeit chain were arrested on United States grounds in New York and the other in Las Vegas. With the arrest came the seizure of their assets that they most likely attained from the sales of the replica goods, which included 29 bank accounts and 3 New York properties and over $16 million in sales from the luxury goods (Gucci, Coach, Burberry and much more).

Obstacles
I know when I started a clothing line many things were different. One is that there was no Dobizo… ;) and two the market wasn’t as saturated, also the amount of clothing lines entering the market seems to increase with each year passing…so the competition is stiff now more than ever.

Besides the above two factors I thought about some of the problems or obstacles that really stood out to me or took great dedication or perseverance to overcome when I started out in the fashion industry. I wanted to share them with you guys to maybe give you a heads up or see if you have faced similar problems and what you did to overcome them. Also share your top five obstacles that you have overcome so far in your journey to starting a successful clothing line from scratch.

Here are my top five in no particular order: (This is a short article, but definitely a good exercise one that we can all benefit from!)

Many publications are reporting slack retail sales all across the boards. From ending the year in slack holiday sales and earlier in the ‘07 year with weak back to school numbers 2008 is looking to be a bad year for retailers, which will ultimately affect clothing company’s bottom line.

Consumers are clutching their wallets and spending less frivolously. I’m going to predict that this will be a tough year for startups who depend on their sales at retail and don’t have the necessary cash flow to continue to produce season to season with continued soft sales on the retail side.

What are you doing to prepare for the so-called drought?

Interesting definition I found while browsing the Global Fashion Network Forums.

DelMonicole asked the following question:

Hello Everyone,

Recently I contacted a business that manufacturers fabrics overseas. The business asked me for my courier ac freight number, so that they can send samples. Does anyone know what is an AC courier freight number. I was wondering is it the same as an address. Please respond with your thoughts.

Thanks

Our star forum moderator Thom responded:

The overseas fabric manufacturers want a Fedex,UPS or DHL account number so they can send samples on your bill. If you don’t have one, I would get one, cause they will not send swatches via local post.

Why would you think it has anything to do with an address ?

I know that I have an account with UPS from having them pick up packages from my office on a regular basis. Basically they will swing by on a set frequency to pick up packages depending on how often you send and receive packages.

Advanstar (Parent company of apparel trade show MAGIC) has appointed Chris DeMoulin former Disney executive and film marketer as the new president of MAGIC International.

At first glance this seemed to be a mistake by appointing the executive of an entertainment empire as president of the apparel industry’s leading trade show, but after a little research I found that Chris DeMoulin is very much qualified for the position. In addition to his position at MAGIC Chris has also been appointed as executive vice-president of Advanstar?s fashion group, where he will advise for the Project and Pool shows.

Prior to joining Advanstar Chris was head of a private consulting firm and the senior vice president of retail for Disney’s consumer products group. What caught my attention was the fact that he is credited with negotiating more than $1billion in apparel licensing agreements..$billion so the numbers speak for themselves.

In other news Magic is still in discussion of cutting the show down to three days instead of the four that it currently operates at, but still nothing is final for more read Magic Trade Show is Considering Shortening Show Cycle to Three Days

DandMo'sPhotobucket

I am going to start highlighting standout members of the week. Basically it’s a way to give back to our loyal members and promote some great businesses and ideas in the process.

Make sure and pay their Global Fashion Network profile a visit by clicking here.

With all the talk about going green and companies being more eco-friendly this is the perfect business for the start of a rather bad year for the fashion industry with sales being in a slump on the retail level.

What has your company did in the past or beginning to do in order to be more green or eco-friendly?
