I thought this was a rather interesting post I was reading while doing my morning scan.
Something I could definitely share with you guys. I was checking hoping none of the business I started was featured on the list.
I really didn’t expect clothing or internet to be on there, because consumers are always going to buy clothes might not be my brand, but that is what reinventing yourself is for.
Here is the list:
Record Stores
According to Entrepreneur record stores are closing in record numbers. For one Tower Records which at one time was a big competitor in the music, dvd, cd field has closed down all 89 stores, because of stiff competition from Wal-Mart and the online music industry. I think many others are feeling that wrath too. I know local stores FYE and other music stores around the way have closed their doors for good…don’t you hate it when that happens tough break.
Odds of survival in 10 years were: Great only if you consider Wal-Mart a record store…I mean who doesn’t
Camera Film Manufacturing: I mean to be truthful I know nothing about this industry except for you put the film in the camera and take pictures. Hopefully for the entrepreneurs running these businesses they are knowledgeable in other fields, because the outlook for their industry is rather bleak. Mainly because of the digital prints industry has grown last year alone by more than 34%, while film prints fell by 49% almost cut in half.
10 year outlook: not good in less you specialize in the field and could maybe pull some work from an amateur photographer.
Crop Dusters: Another field I know anything about, but it doesn’t matter because their days are coming to an end. Maybe because the average age of a crop duster is 60…I will definitely be retired by then.
10 year outlook: That damn technology gets them every time. Farmers say they will always need crop dusters, but not in the same frequency as before do to technological advances in the farming field. Most likely you could do it, but not make a living off of it and how much fun would that be
.
Gay Bars: Now this one surprised me, but then on the other end made some sense. Most gay bars have been closing down, because they were once there for gay men and women to go being they weren’t accepted in general hangout spots. Now that people everywhere are being more open about the topic they have gained greater acceptance into general society.
10 year outlook: Only the strong will survive…the rest well read the topic headline.
Newspapers: This one totally made since to me since news is being brought to people in so many formats via blog, websites, radio and tv. Who wants to wait on the newspaper boy anymore! Not me. According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations the newspaper industry has posted numerous drops in the past six months averaging between a 2.1-2.8% decrease and because of that newspaper staffs have been slimming down.
10 year outlook: Let’s just say you won’t read this in a newspaper in the next 10 years. Most news will be on the internet so I suggest they adjust their distribution accordingly.
Pay phones: This was rather odd, but I thought pay phones were already extinct can’t remember the last time I used one. There will always be pay phones, but only where they are needed in hotels, airport, and bus stations. Many cities are trying to do away with pay phones because it gives drug dealers a place to conduct business without worrying about their phones being tapped and recorded for evidence.
10 year prediction: Drug dealers will most likely spend more time around airports and hotels in the near future or go back to pagers.
Used Bookstores: The future is not looking too bright for them and many are turning to the internet, which is what caused the sudden decrease in retail brick and mortar business. If you noticed most of the off line business counterparts are suffering because of the internet….Google is to blame.
10 year outlook: Only the strong will survive or ones with a loyal customer base.
Piggy banks: I think this was just a plug in, but true I can’t remember the last time I cracked open ole‘ piglet.
10 year outlook: Many people will again start to use piggy banks…yeah when pigs fly!
Most likely only collectors and antique shops will still have any use for them.
Telemarketing: I can’t say I’m not glad, but I know people who make a good solid living off of calling me at 7 am in the morning asking me about switching to their service provider. Most of the market suffers because of the National Do-Not-Call list, but still managed to bring in over $300 billion last year…I wouldn’t mind suffering while bringing in that much money
. The industry could easily make a comeback with the list due to expire in 2008 unless you people go out and re-register for it…this is your reminder.
10 year outlook: Telemarketing is here to stay, but it will never be as bothersome.
Coin Operated Video Arcades: Remember going to the mall arcade and spending all your allowance on Tekken 3 or Pacman well not for much longer, because the internet once again is shutting down another industry. With the introduction of gaming online and major gaming systems like Nintindo WII and Xbox 360 taking online gaming to another level. The amount of standalone video arcades has dropped by more than 60% in the last 10 years.
Industry in ten years: Just make sure you have internet connection or the new gaming system at home
