DNR reports: Apparel and Accessories retail sales fell in March due to various economic conditions. Due to an early easter and the overall slow condition of the current economy.

Apparel and accessories specialty store sales dropped 0.5 percent in last month from the prior month. Department store sales were flat compared to a month ago and gas prices where at the highest of the year in March.

    Interesting… I know were not in the booming economy of 5 years ago, so retailers dont necessarily have as much cash to try out new apparel companies, but at the same time, clearly the things they have on their shelves are not moving as they used to, opening a window for a pitch. When I talk to buyers I really emphasize how important it is to ME that the shirts move quickly off of THEIR shelves. Conglomerates have the advantage of brand awareness, but you, as a smaller company, have the advantage of personal marketing. My company makes apparel for freestyle skiers, snowboarders and skateboarders, a seriously saturated market, but my pitch always includes the personal touch, telling the retailers that I am out at their local skate parks, or terrain parks every weekend, driving customers in to their stores. Get one store to take a chance, then market the hell out of your product, use that store’s sales as a spring board in to new stores. Smaller stores get excited when you tell them you will be telling their exact target market to go in to their store. Thats my two cents on that
