Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel wasn’t always an orphan. At age twelve her mother passed and left her father to care for six siblings. Soon after he left the children to fend for themselves and that is when Coco was in the Orphanage of The Catholic Monastery of Aubazine for the next seven years, where she learned how to sew and became a seamstress.

At the age of eighteen, she left the orphanage and began work for a local tailor. She adopted her name Coco while working at a cafe and as a concert singer. Later she began designing hats as a hobby. They began to catch on and gain the attention of female Parisian socialites.

In 1909, with the help of Balsan (An affair she was having at the time) and Arthur “Boy” Capel, another rich lover, Coco was able to open her own millinery, a hat shop called ”Chanel Modes.” It was located at 31 rue Cambon in Paris.

Former Ceo of Conde Nast Publications Inc Steve Florio died last week of heart complications which has plagued him throughout his lifetime.

Steve Florio played an important role in the fashion industry as the head of Conde Naste which is a division of two of the leading news, trends, and informational magazines DNR and WWD for the apparel industry. If you’re not familiar with those two publications you should subscribe and pick up a copy of both as soon as possible.

Jeans made by Levi Strauss before 1971 where the “E” on the LEVI tab was a capital letter opposed to the tab on today’s jeans. (I checked a pair and it is true) Below are pictures of both:

Big E tab:

Current Tab:
Current Levi's Red Tab

I’m not sure if it was a mistake by Levi and consumers caught on to it and branded them the Big E jeans or what, but nonetheless I thought it was interesting.

I had already made that prediction in the article about the International Anti-Counterfeit Trade Agreement.

During the discussion in the World Trade Organization forum that more than 80 percent of counterfeits seized by customs authorities agents at their borders came from China and last year more than 70 percent of counterfeit goods seized were made in China.

Who would think that Spain still had a non-standardized clothing measuring system, but I’m pretty sure they’re not the only country that lacks in the fashion industry department.

According to The Independent consumers have a better chance at winning the lottery than finding their correct size in a timely manner while shopping in Spain for the new fashionable items. Because one stores 12 will be another stores 14 and another stores 10 so it is not unusual to see women rushing to the dressing room with more than three of the same item (different sizes) in hand.

The countries government has grown tired of the complaints and finally plans to make a change with the help of some of their more prominent clothing brands, leading retailers, and manufacturers including: Inditex empire ? owner of the fast-fashion giant Zara, Mango, department store El Corte Ingl?s, and clothing chain Cortefiel and many more will most likely follow suit since these businesses dominate the Spanish market, but also have a strong international appeal.

Apparel & Textile imports reached an all time year in the month of August weighing in at 5 billion square meter equivalents, or worth $9.6 billion. Imports showed a decrease in other areas and an increase in sales of U.S. goods and services to other countries narrowed the total trade deficit.

A unique fashion fact I found from the WWD website is that a British General named Field Marshal (known as Lord FitzRoy Somerset before 1852) Lord Raglan had raglan sleeves constructed for himself after losing his arm during the Crimean War in the charge of the Light Brigade in 1854-1856.

You can clearly see the stitched raglan sleeve although it was a little different back then in this picture:

The Crimean war is sometimes considered to be the first “modern” conflict in that it introduced technical changes which affected the future course of warfare for the world.

Ralph Lauren celebrated the forty year anniversary of his empire of a clothing company Polo Ralph Lauren. The Polo brand is probably older than most entrepreneurs who read this blog :) .

With this post I kick off the addition of a new category titled “Inspiration” which will be post that well inspire us. I mean I know we all agree that reaching the 40th year of any business is a big accomplishment, but a fashion company causes for even more celebration considering most don’t make it 5-10 years.

Ralph Lauren celebrated during the New York Fashion Week. Press is saying it was one of the most extravagant events during fashion week and attendance to the party was at 500 guest.

Ralph Lauren chose to hold the event in Central Park’s Conservatory Garden, and was a black-tie event that drew famous designers like Donna Karan (DKNY) and Vera Wang. Fashion week was attended by designer brands such as Zac Posen (See video here), BcBg and clothing companies including Sean John, and Baby Phat.

Eton is the creator of the Unit Production System. You can see the definition of UPS here. Eton is a leading provider of UPS for the sewn product industry.

While I’m not sure if the above is a true statement, but I’m guessing it’s there “claim to fame”. On the site they state also that they are the makers of the world?s most versatile and technologically advanced UPS.

In the mid 1960’s, the Swedish apparel industry a number of cost related problems and the need for quicker delivery times was a must. Sewers were wasting too much time on carrying and handling material instead of sewing and money being tied up in work in progress, but nothing was being completed in a timely manner.

All these reasons prompted Eton to develop the Eton System or?what the apparel industry widely knows it as UPS.

lacoste-polo-shirt.jpg?

As you can probably guess that Rene Lacoste is the founder of the Lacoste clothing company and if you did you are correct.

What most don’t know and I didn’t up until today was that Rene Lacoste created the Polo “Tennis” Shirt in 1929 to have something more comfortable to wear while playing tennis and it was adopted by polo players to the point that it was deemed the polo shirt.

No later was than named?Chemise Lacoste was created with?its main?claim to fame?being the more fashionable higher quality polo shirt that many of its competitors tried to copy, but couldn’t compete at the time do to the following that Rene had created. Many believed that the other apparel brands lacked quality compared to the?Chemise Lacoste brand.?

Before flipping the collar up on a polo shirt became fashionable it was a function used to block the sun from your neck during the outdoor sports ;) .
