Andy Warhol Clothing Line

Good to see a clothing line started with some kind of substance and at least we know it will have a certain amount of originality, plus a smidge of creativity. The Andy Warhol line is headed up by jean giant Levi Strauss, is based on all of Andy Warhol original works and will debut on be featured on Drjay’s a premier online and store front retailer. The line is produced under a licensing agreement with The Andy Warhol Foundation For The Visual Arts. I expect this line to do some big numbers…what do you think?

Is this a new trend in the making artist inspired clothing?

I found this clothing line while looking through the new issue of Giant magazine, which is a great read by the way. PrivacyWear the clothing line itself isn’t the most original design wise, but they still have some great pieces that make up for a full clothing company (Reminded me of the Rocawear clothing line).

Everything from jeans, jackets, linen shorts, and t-shirts for both men & women make up the apparel collection known as Privacy Wear. The clothing line really caught my attention, because they started a clothing line for more than the obvious reason to make money. The owners’ mother died of breast cancer and she decided to start a clothing line to make money too help find a cure. Carolyn Jones the founder of the company started the company in the hopes of offering customers a new fresh selection of garments inspired by life….something we can all relate too. So its more than clothing…it’s clothing for a cause. The company has great financing I’m assuming, because they have commercials with regular rotation on MTV, Lifetime Network, ESPN, and VH1. When you have a little time head on over to the online shop and support the cause. The clothing is not like most companies who are supporting cause and just produce simple shirts with words. They actually took the time to produce a line with meaning and seem to be going after the urban or street wear market. The website is well designed and easy to navigate.

The site describes the Monarchy Apparel Collection as a premium men’s and women’s collection. The brand brings a eclectic mix of tees, thermals, denims, slacks, hooded sweatshirts, blazers, track jackets, wovens, belts, and head wear (Full blown clothing company). The brand is headed up by Eric Kim and has had a following of Hollywood a-listers since its inception. The denim is hand-crafted in Los Angeles (Sweatshop free :) ) and uses only premium quality methods and materials for its construction. Some of Monarchy’s denim and intricate embroidery separates them from the other pool of premium/upscale brands with prices that complement the quality.

I remember seeing Artful Dodger back in 2005 November….I knew the hoodies at least would be a hit. The quality on some of their hoodies-no competition at least in the street wear market. I heard of another brand around the same time I think it was Scott Langston. A lot of similarity between them and the Artful Dodger brand come to find out it is the same company. Artful Dodger is basically the urban child of Scott Langston which caters to a more slim fit wearing customer, while Artful Dodger has a much larger cut than its cousin Scott Langston. Even though many of their designs favor I guess with different target markets no one was suppose to notice.

Pick of the day: Mike 23

Posted by: Jay Aces in Pick of the day |

Mike 23 is well known for their Jordan inspired designs , especially their heavy use of the crackle print found on the Air Jordan 3’s. They have a nice line of t-shirt’s as well as a selection of hoodies, beanies, and shoes. One of their most inventive products was the custom crackle sofa with sneaker display cases. They’ve even added an umbrella and bean bag chair to the mix which will be available at their website www.mike23.com on March 12th. They are a good example of a fashion brand that has branched out but still kept their integrity and appeal to their core market base. Definitely a brand to draw some motivation from.

SNAC clothing is based out of (I don’t know) but I’m assuming Los Angeles, Ca according to their myspace page. Their clothing line from what I’ve seen consist of shirts, hoodies, jeans, beanies and they even have their own buttons with the SNAC logo on it! I’m really feeling some of their pieces and it looks like a urban/street line with more of a…… were just going to say comfortable fit not too baggy. Even though I did see a bit of the skull/wing business going on with their line which has already been done by many clothing lines…I really don’t know but it seems like these graphics might become a staple in street wear fashion. According to the website you can get your SNAC fix at select D.E.M.O stores. Take a glimpse at the SNAC lookbook and give your opinion on their line up. They even have a theme song for their clothing line on the website take time and give it a good listen.

I chose them not because of their designs or sales, but because they took something so regular and made it one of the most sought after brands in urban fashion. The funny thing is because they made this possible all because of their marketing strategy. The design is suppose to be a G but is often mistaken for a 9. Last year I read on countless message boards and fashion sites people asking “what is the name of the brand with all the 9’s on the shirts”. Come to find out later last year it was all part of their marketing strategy placing shirts on every celebrity and building a buzz over the confusion. I for one have to congratulate them on it. Comes to show you anything is possible with a little careful planning and execution. This is a most likely going to be a trend and we will see the Gino Green Global brand rise and fall within a two year stint at most….mark my words. Rapid rise, Rapid fall.

Orchard Street which is a clothing line ran by two guys that also play parts in the music industry-which is pretty relevant from all the celebrities you can see wearing their clothing everyone from P.Diddy to Jude Law. Their clothing line is a reflection of the music culture drawing not from only hip hop, but also rock, and other inspirations are relevant in the garments presented by Orchard Street. The name is paying tribute to a popular street in Manhattan and also where they derive many of their designs from the culture and upbringing in the diverse city culture. Not much about the clothing brand as far as the owners names or location (probably New York), but I know they are making a lot of noise in the street wear arena and have a good chance of becoming one of the premier lines for some years to come.

I’m pretty sure a lot of you guys are familiar with The Hundreds Clothing line which is ran by Ben and Bobby Hundreds out of California. I was going to write this article as fashion news, but since the news is kind of old I decided to also use them as the pick of the day because they definitely deserve it. Although when I first started the blog we didn’t agree on some things mainly over an interview. Not really sweating that their still doing it real big nonetheless and wish them much, much, more success on everything they’re doing.

Anyway on to the news The Hundreds has just opened their first retail location for the The Hundreds, Tens, Public Label brands in Los Angeles, California. So far I’m most impressed with the women’s line Tens and I’m really feeling some of their graphic tees from The Hundreds brand. From the pics of the store posted on their blog its a nice clean layout with a dark setting and gives a more boutique feel. I know this is a dream for many clothing brands and just to think they started their clothing brands with JUST T-SHIRTS! Look at them now they produce denims, sweaters, jackets, pins, stickers, and most items that these million dollar brands produce, but on a smaller scale. Probably not long before The Hundreds becomes something along the lines of A Bathing Ape being a very, very, limited and sought after brand in the street wear arena.

I liked the story behind this clothing line that’s mostly why I picked it and the designs are not too shabby either. Matt Henri started Free Gold Watch-which is a clothing line/print shop out of his garage near the Haight-Ashbury district. The name comes from the long printed tag that comes with each garment in which you can cut out the print of a gold watch. He had no job and supported himself financially through his t-shirt sells which have now expanded to include hoodies and will celebrate their first year anniversary in April 2007.
