This is a quick definition I had to cover in order to make a reference in a future article.

It is not directly related to the fashion industry, but one of the processes used in the industry could not function properly without it. (CAD)

A product data management system plays as a storage system while it contains and manages the different components product specifications (tech packs) , CAD sketches and drafts. PDM keeps all data intact while going through the different processes of a product from inception, to design, manufacturing, and so on until it is fully developed.

For starters, Fred said it was a quick definition, but what he is pointing out is that PDM will enable you to accurately assign costs for all components, track who and where you are buying these components from.
For clothing companies doing more than one or two styles, this is a pretty important aspect when assigning costs and and calculating true cost of producing goods (COG). This form itself is called a BOM (Bill of Materials) and forms part of your tech pack.

Another benefit of PDM is that these tech packs can go out to different contractors and they provide an accurate guideline to follow. Any design changes are noted, dated, and instructions given, whether for internal or external use.

Call it what you may, but at some point you need to formalize and organize all the notes and details you gather when developing/manufacturing a line. This will serve as a good reference when remaking or redesigning apparel styles and save on redevelopment costs.
That would benefit a clothing company.
