I’m pretty sure everyone has seen private label brands, because they are available in all markets whether it is food, medicine or clothing. My definition of a private label is a store/retailer brand that is most likely developed as a cheaper alternative or looks like another international or popular brand at a lower price, but is only available in the retailers department stores or boutique.
I know you have seen the private label food or medicine, because you will usually see the “Compare to Tylenol” or “Compare to Cheerios” . Stores like JcPenney’s or Dillard’s usually have private label brands that are very popular and have high profit margins due to cutting out the need to buy at wholesale and have designers that produce multiple private/store label brands. Private labels are usually developed to fill niches in an apparel stores assortments or complement hot selling items in a department store to fulfill customer needs. JcPenney’s launched two private labels in 2006 alone called a.n.a and Solitude, while also developing temporary stores in New York’s Time Square to build a buzz around all the private labels they offer.
Private label branding is not just for large retailers and has been utilized by smaller boutiques including Brooklyn Circus, which is a popular street wear boutique located in Brooklyn, New York and Leaders 1354 in Chicago has developed there on in house private labels.
