The selvedge is the knitted edge of a piece of fabric, as opposed to a cut edge. A piece of fabric with a selvedge at both edges has been knitted to width. The selvedge will not unravel as a cut edge would before linking or over locking. The side edges are basically reinforced to prevent raveling.
