Serging is something I would definitely consider a sewing term. You might not be familiar with the word, but you have most likely seen the technique on a garment or even accessories in your home (A carpet). Serging is a technique used to finish raw edges on a piece of fabric or garment to keep it from unraveling by overcasting. If your t-shirt has side seams and you flip it inside-out you will see the raw edges with?the?overcast stitch (A v shaped or zig zag looking stitch). They also have special sergers that create flat finished seams where you wouldn’t won’t the fabric rubbing against you or for a cleaner finish like under garments or hats. (Picture Below)

The action of serging is usually performed with a serger. From my experience in fashion design classes the serger was easier to work with than a sewing machine. It was more?just hand eye coordination and keeping the fabric steady as it feeds through the machine. A serger has been adopted by many fashion lines in different ways to increase the appeal or creativity within a design. I have seen some designers with the serging on the outer side of the garment as a type of decoration along the neck or sideseams.
