I have to say this was rather interesting to me, because I always new the function of a SKU number, but never actually new the breakdown of the abbreviation SKU meant stock keeping unit…see how far a little research can get you. I actually think the daily definition articles were a great idea from the get-go, because it keeps us up to date with fashion industry lingo and terms.
SKU numbers are usually used on clothing or product tags to track inventory stock for a retailer or warehouses so that they can keep good sellers in stock by knowing when inventory is low and needs to be replenished. Also SKU’s are categorized by items that have the same design, style, color and other characteristics in common.
SKU’s get a little more advance once you go past the merchant-retail level. One item can have multiple SKU’s. For example you may have one style with three different SKU’s depending on if it has variants and/or offered in variety’s. This is more common in high fashion designs because they usually have shorter life cycles and offer multiple collections throughout the year and some may be a alternative of a certain style offered before, but a different SKU number enables them to manage data on each style.
Most smaller clothing companies don’t make use of stock keeping units, because there is so little data to manage and it would be an extra cost or expense on such a small scale operation.
