Since we have been talking about freelance services this week so far I decided to talk about what a freelance worker is and why it is better than hiring an employee in my opinion. There are pros & cons of both worlds, but I think the advantage is toward freelancers when it comes to independent or smaller clothing companies meaning it is more cost effective for short projects. When a company’s financial situation is better I would encourage them to hire a employee that can grow with the company and better understand their needs in the long run.
In its simplest form a freelance worker is an independent contractor for hire. They are a business within themselves because many of them make a full-time living off of freelance work from major clothing companies.
Many of the clothing companies you know and love have at one time hired freelance workers for design jobs. So it is not something only smaller apparel companies make use of, but smart clothing businesses.
I think a freelancer could definitely be used when you have less time to allocate to designing or your business finances are sufficient to the point where you could hire a designer full or part time.
Many make use of freelance workers in order to not have your money tied up in salaries, benefits, office space, insurance and other business cost that come with hiring a employee full or part time.
If you do decide to hire a freelance worker make sure they are reliable and have a proven track record behind their word in the apparel industry.
