Discharge Ink Printing Process: (this process is being brought back in a big way?.learn about it!) Very interesting process

Discharge Printing:

Is a technique of printing when a bleaching agent or color destroying agent is used on pre-dyed fabric in our case garments (usually slightly darker colors) to ?white out? a pattern on a darker colored garment. The area where the agent is discharged onto ?hence the name discharge printing? can be left white or printed on top of with whatever dye colors you desire.

Discharge ink printing is not a brand new concept, which is what most believe just wasn?t as popular until now. Actually has been around for years and just become popular again especially in the street wear industry. Discharge printing is being brought back in a big way and is showing up on garments in many of your favorite brands.

At first look it might appear the same, but discharge printing has no thick under base which is associated with most everyday plastisol printing and a very soft print. Unlike plastisol prints when discharge printing on a black garment the print is almost transparent until it is ?cured?/dried (daily definition on cured coming soon) in an oven chamber. The ink of the print is actually dyed into the garment and not on the surface?leaving you with the soft print I spoke of earlier in the article.

I haven?t used any discharge printing as of yet, but from what I?ve heard and seen it is going to be coming back full force and being used as another everyday alternative printing technique. Have any of you guys/girls ever used the discharge printing process or have any experience with it? leave a comment with your opinion on this revamped technique!

A great discharge ink is made by matsui. Just google them. Pretty fun to play with. We will be using it a lot more once we get the hang of it. We do all our printing in house. It’s nice to have control over your product. We will also be using a lot more water based inks since they are getting to be a lot more print friendly.

I have tried discharge inks. Standard screens has some with premixed colors. I have been wanting to know more about it because you only have 8 hours to work with. So I wanted to know how to mix my own colors. I believe you have to work with pure pigment. Does anyone know more?

    Dust,

Yes you have to work with pure pigment….to get consistant results you have to weigh out everything. Start with 100% base add 10% pigment …mix that in …then add your activator…you can add more pigment if you would like …depends on how bright you want the color to come out ..
