Right on the heels of the post from yesterday about Custom dying t-shirts for your clothing line?is a daily definition that came from one of?our forum administrators Thom….whom by the way is doing a great job ;) .

Here is the definition from the forum:

Essentially you buy PFD (prepared for dye) blanks and find a source who can garment dye them for you. Not everyone does garment dye. Some businesses that do fabric washing also do garment dye. You need to ask them. PFD garments have been sized to assume shrinkage after dyeing too.People do this as they cannot meet minimum fabric yardage requirements where the rolls of fabric are piece dyed.

The effect is much different between garment and piece dye goods. Garment dyeing gives apparel an “uneven’ sometimes faded look while piece dyeing fabric is consistent , no color fading ,crocking, crease marks etc..

Garment dyers charge by the lb.. Obviously the more units the better. The weight is measured when the garment is wet, not dry. You should be able to match different lots as well. Ask for a lab dip or test dip.

This is definitely a great rundown/introduction to garment dyeing, because I have no experience in that area other than a few projects I might have played around with.

I went ahead and dug a little deeper into garment dyeing finding some companies who supply blanks and the service?for the process you can check them out below:

The Dye House

Fashion Blanks

Cotton Smith

4 Season Garments?(Very Descriptive Site)

These are just a few of many. If you want more it is as easy as 1,2,3…Google.
