Does it matter if you know how to sew or make clothes at all?
Knowing how to sew is not required, but is a great advantage do too cutting cost on overhead for samples and some production cost. When producing a line at first most use blanks anyway so no sewing from your end is required unless of course u want too sew in your custom labels!

If you are doing just a t-shirt line or a hoody line where blanks can be bought for peanuts, then I would agree with Fashion CEO’s statement. If you plan on delving into other areas of apparel, then I strongly suggest you learn as much as possible about apparel construction, seam classification, fabric cutting etc..
Knowing about the process of manufacture wll give you a serious edge over your competitors and give you an appreciation for the work that is being carried out on your behalf.
Simple things like how many minutes are there in a five piece knit top, all serge, no TS, will be of benefit to you and new contractors won’t think your an imbecile for not knowing this . That is if you get as far as needing new contractors.
In most garment categories, labour is the largest cost component. Having this knowledge will allow you to make easier decisions on many aspects of your line.
One more thing. If you ever get to the point of doing your own manufacturing, whether it’s in Asia or produced domestically, you will garner more respect if you have garment making “know how”. This will lead to many positive things for your company. Contractors or manufacturers won’t just see you as just another company printing
blanks.
Try to learn as much as possible about sewing.You needn’t have to learn to sew, but know the procedures, seams, pattern making.The list is vast.It won’t take you too long to master. Most get the hang of it in a couple of years.

I totally agree with you Thom…all these posts where just to embed them on the site and all were from when I first begin this blog (they were all located in the FAQ section of the old site) as a hobby and most just seemed to want to know about street wear or urban wear companies and now that I see their is an audience for starting a clothing company in general I will start to cater more to that audience….
but yeah knowing the process will definetly help being that if you know the process and understand some of the methods you could better identify if you’re getting a fair price for services you are receiving from a contractor, pattern maker…or whatever. Thom always makes some great points…glad to have you hear!

It’s a whole bunch of people that didn’t know about blanks,and im one of them,and when i found out.. i jumped for joy,laughed,screamed,ran through the house, i didn’t know what to do..I told my wife about it and she went crazy too….I understood you well Mr.Ceo when you said….when producing a line at first most use blanks,cause thats exactly what im gonna use from the start…..Mr.Thom said t-shirts and hoodies..is that all,can i use jeans as well.

I just saw Derek’s request, about 6 months late. You can find some jeans supplier who will sell “blanks” in this category.Be forewarned. Jeans are a much more personal choice amongst consumers when buying apparel. Unlike hoodys or T’s.
If you find a jeans” blanks” supplier, you have to accept their fit, fabric, wash/finish, and it may not be what your target customer wants. Woman(and many men) have been known to be “brand loyal” to specific jeans lines for years because if specific fit, finsih etc..
One reason why people custom manufacture their own jeans in the first place. It is fickle, but lucrative if you get it right.

Hi, my girlfriend wants to start her own line of clothes. But she knows NOTHING about designing clothes. She just has a concept of type of clothes she wants to sell. Is it possible for her to find a designer to design? Or what should she do?
