French fashion designer Christian Dior was born on January 21, 1905 in Granville Manche. Dior attended Ecole des Sciences Politiques from 1920-1925 at the submission of his parents hoping young Christian would follow in his family footsteps and become a diplomat, but he had other plans in mind.
He later served the obligatory two years in the French Army after graduating. In 1928 he opened a small art gallery selling the works of Picasso, and many other prominent artist of that time. He would later be forced to close the art gallery due to his own illness (contracted with tuberculosis) his mother dying of cancer and his father’s business going belly up and declaring bankruptcy. During this time in life is where Christian discovered his love for fashion designing and started working as a assistant designer and fashion illustrator.
In 1939 his efforts came to a stand still due to being deployed by the French Army. After serving his duties he went back to designing in 1947 where he launched The House of Dior and an editor (Carmel Snow) of Harpers Bazaar coined his styling “The New Look” because they we’re more shapely and Dior’s designs were more voluptuous than the boxy, fabric-conserving shapes of the recent World War II styles, influenced by the rations on fabric.
His career as a fashion designer was short lived, because he died in 1957 at a health spa. Some say he choked on a fish bone and died of a heart attack and Time Magazines Obituary stated that he had an heart attack after playing a game of cards. However, Paris socialites and Dior acquaintances Alexis von Rosenberg, Baron de Rédé stated in his memoirs that contemporary rumor had it that the fashion designer died of a heart attack after a strenuous sexual encounter with two young men. His companion, at the time of his death, was an Algerian-born singer, Jacques Benita
