I know this is a very important topic when starting a clothing line that I have yet to mention on this blog and that?s child labor laws and sweatshops. A lot of designers neglect to inspect with factories they deal with because of the distance between them and the manufacturer which in most cases child labor or sweatshops are usually violated overseas.
The topic came back to me while browsing Daily News Record online I read over an article which is posted below:
“WASHINGTON (January 24, 2007) - A bipartisan group of senators introduced legislation Tuesday that would ban the sale in the U.S. of imported products deemed made in ?sweatshops? overseas. Sens. Byron Dorgan (D. N.D.), Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) and Sherrod Brown (D, Ohio) introduced the ?Decent Working Conditions and Fair Competition Act,? with the objective of cracking down on products made in factories overseas where ?workers are abused in violation of that country?s labor laws.? The bill would direct the Federal Trade Commission to conduct an investigation, based on complaints, to determine whether a foreign factory was abusing employees producing apparel and other products. If such a ruling were made, the FTC would issue an order prohibiting products from the factory into the
Each violation of that order would carry a civil penalty of $10,000. Customs and Border Protection would be required to enforce the penalties. KRISTI ELLIS”
Major designers from Sean John to small startups have been accused of violating child labor laws in the production of their clothing. While it was negative press they seem to have made it through without any major setbacks, but the same accusations could have a negative affect on your businesses bottom line.

You’ve mentioned a bit about child labor laws. I was wondering where do you stand on child labor? Is it necessarily a bad thing if children have to work to help support their families?
