Damon Dash who was previously the part owner of million dollar urban brand Rocawear has decided to launch Pro-Keds apparel in addition to Pro-Keds sneakers, which he acquired earlier in his rising career as a label executive at Rocafella. I’m guessing he closed the doors on his CEO clothing line that supposedly released earlier last year after slack sales. For now the line will consist?of t-shirts and hoodies.?Be on the look out for the Pro-Keds apparel line in stores this fall-winter right in time for back to school sales.

At one point, before the Nikes and Adidas brands began to dominate athletic footwear, two companies were household names for “sneakers” or gym shoes, with KEDS being one of them. I am not surprised to see this Dash fellow try to resurrect the name in the form of apparel sales. KEDS is a brand with history, a story, and they acquired this history in a different era.

Another company that is attempting to enter the apparel world following a period of footwear dormancy is PF Flyers. After New Balance acquired the rights to the company in 2001, they set forth to produce both shoes and apparel. I understand the shoe part is going well, but the apparel side may be sputtering.

They hired a design firm in NYC to create a line of higher end casual gear. They wanted to create an illustrious image to compliment a vintage shoe look. Trouble was PF Flyers only made gym sneakers, not dress shoes, and putting together a clothing line proved challenging.
So now we have KEDS and PF Flyers in the clothing business. Both were household names in sneakers over several decades. Both were victims of the onslaught of the mega shoe companies that started in the early Seventies with the Swoosh and the Stripes.

My money is on this Dash fellow to succeed while I think New Balance is way to stiff to pull off any apparel success. In fact, while they make some of the best fitting footwear, apparel sales are very dim.

Some people are shoe people, some are better suited to clothing. Good Luck Mr Dash. Bring back some nostalgia to the world.

I have no doubt that he will be successful. I’m anxious to see just how he goes about it.
