Counterfeit Clothing

About time somebody decided to do something about the counterfeiting and bootleggers within the United States and abroad. I think it is definitely a need for it to be an agreement put in force internationally considering that most of the counterfeited goods are being shipped from overseas. The counterfeit trade drains between $200 -$250 billion dollars from the US economy annually and there is not sign of it decreasing anytime soon hopefully this will have an impact on those participating in the counterfeit trade.

Territories participating in the Anti-Counterfeit agreement include Canada, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, New Zealand and Switzerland hopefully more will soon follow suit. My problem is that China has not decided to join the agreement and that is definitely something to consider because most counterfeit manufacturing operations and shipments seem to come from China.

The agreement could lead to stronger laws and tougher enforcement standards while creating a set of best practices and a framework that other countries could join.

According to DNR:

“The U.S. has already taken steps to combat fakes from China. In August, the Bush administration brought a World Trade Organization case against China, challenging the country’s legal protections and enforcement of intellectual property rights.”

At least Bush is making steps toward helping the apparel industry on a more positive note.
