I’ve been to Magic a few times and have mixed emotions about the event. First and foremost, it is promoted heavily because owning and holding trade shows in the apparel industry is a huge business. Advanstar put on several shows including Magic and many are of the opinion that they make the most money of any company associated with the event. It is extremely expensive to participate. Figure on at least 4-6 grand min.

My advice to any newbie clothing company is to walk the event first speaking with companies willing to share and exchange ideas about the show.
Many participants are lead to believe that you are a nobody if you don’t exhibit , and you will walk away with handfuls of written orders. Not true at all. In fact, a good percentage leave Las Vegas with no orders. Only a small percent write paper at these shows, and a large percentage of exhibitors attend just to let everyone know they are still around, ontop, reinvented themselves etc…

Take the money you would spend at Magic and figure out how may sales calls you could make on say 5 grand. I will bet any money you will write more orders during these sales calls than you would during the Magic Show.

The Pool and Project Shows are designed for the lesser known brands and subsequently have lower fees, but again, don’t get your hopes up you will write a ton a business. Retailers and boutique owners are know to prowl around Pool and Project looking for new fresh faces and ideas. Some go to look for newbies willing to extend terms to retail stores.

I will say that Magic does serve up a mighty tasty free lunch to attendees. It is Las Vegas afterall. I think attending will give people new to the industry a glimpse of just how vast the business is and how global it has become. The Sourcing section was added recently as globalization plays an effect on the US clothing industry. I think this show has gotten out of hand and the owners ,Advanstar, like making the big bucks, and don’t give a crap whether the small guys do well. I think trade shows themselves are in need of some reinvention themselves.

Yeah I agree with you on the Sales calls…thats pretty much what I did to start off getting orders for the first clothing line I started of my own…I think until you build up a list of reputable retailers it’s kind of hard to stand out at magic without any major advertisements or brand awareness….you will probably leave with more contacts and like you said people still knowing you exist. I always have attended shows first then exhibit in them just to get a feel of whats going on….Thom I might have to make you a guest author…lol

  3. Thom Stilton Says:

    Hey CEO,

Let me know what areas you would like me to try an cover. Like I may have said earlier, I know a little about a lot. My Dad always told me that if I didn’t know the answer to a question, take the time to let the person know you will get back to them with correct info. Thats why I like blogs and forums. They are perfect vehicles for sharing information, especially in an industry that desparartely needs the sharing of best practices.

Many will say the apparel industry has gone to “hell in a handbasket” and I can agree to a certain extent. But, it still has a pulse, and is on life support and needs some serious rehabilitation. Your blog is just a small part that will contribute to a resurrection. Encouraging start ups is a important sign that the industry continues to be a viable way of making a living and that you can do it successfully in this hemisphere.

    thanks
