New Era Caps Fights Racial Discrimination Charges and Sweat Shop like Conditions

New Era Cap (My favorite addiction) is being accused of racial discrimination in its Mobile, Alabama facility which employs over 900 workers. The Teamsters union said that black workers at the Mobile, Ala., plant with years of experience had been passed over for promotion in favor of white workers. It also said that all but one manager at the Mobile facility, out of a management administrative staff of more than 20, is white. Also union members said that there are sweatshop conditions going on at the Mobile, Alabama factory.
The company said an unannounced, third-party audit was conducted at the Mobile facility in September and an FLA audit was held at the Jackson facility through an independent external auditor in July. Neither audit, which included confidential and independent interviews with workers, found discrimination, New Era said.
I don’t really understand how an unannounced audit could determine racial discrimination in the case of promotions, but maybe the sweatshop conditions could be proven wrong in that way. They would pretty much have to place someone undercover for a short amount of time and see how they are treated and raised within the ranks at the factory, before determining if there is any discrimination.
What would be the best way to settle this dispute?

That sucks for them. If they are getting wrongfully accused they better get up on their stuff, and address the issue publically with some PR, before the press decides how things are gonna be, and New Era just stays quiet.

i work at the mobile plant the everything the the union has said is true, there is only one black supervisior
everyone else is white and they are dumb as a doornob, job are posted on the board but is does not matter, managerment has chosen who they won’t to have the job. two month age the secterary in
the front office was replace by a temp , this job was never palce on the board until this story broke about the discrimination then the job place on the board, as far as an audit, if there was one managment
hand pick the people that, they talk, all discrimination is not skin color. there are some really bad thing that go on in both plants. by the way the paper in mobile said that the we make “$9.50″ i wish and
the people in jackson some only make $6.25 per hr. while new sales hats that prices from $34.00 to
$225.00 and as far as a bonuses , we get one (1) and after the taxes, we almost have to pay new era
cap for that bonus. we have a supervisior, with no training in anything hair, and plant manager that
had and GED no college and requirement, and asst. plant manager that came into the building to lay bathroom tile. and as far as the product being “american products in america about 85% of what in the mobile D.C. the a gobal product which means it is made in china. wake up NEW ERA CAP YOU NEED TO PAY PEOPLE FAID WAGE AND PROMOTE PEOPLE FAIR , NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE YOUR PARTY BUDDIES
AND BY THE WAY I’M NOT BLACK. AND I’VE SEEN ALL OF THIS HAPPEN IN MOBILE.

HI GUYS THIS NEW ERA THING IS TO FUNNY MY SISTER WORK AT THE JACKSON PLANT, SHE MAKES THE MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL CAP, AND IS ON PRODUCTION. HER BASE PAY IS $6.25 AND THE ONLY WAY SHE CAN MAKE MONEY TO PAY BILLS IS THAT SHE HAD TO SEW THE HELL OF A LOTS OF HATS
THING ARE SO BAD WITH HER, THAT MY FAMILY HAS TO HELP WITH HER KIDS AND BECAUSE THE ARE NOT MANY JOB IN THIS SMALL TOWN , YOU DON’T REALLY HAVE A CHOICE OF THAT MANY JOBS.
I THINK THAT WAY NEW ERA CAME HERE THEY KNEW THAT THEY COULD GET A GOOD PRODUCT MADE
FOR VERY LITTLE PAY.
SHE CAN’T WAIT UNTIL THE TEAMSTER COME TO JACKSON ALL OF THE WORKER THERE CAN’T WAIT
BECAUSE THEY NEED HELP, THEY HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM THAT THE MOBILE PLANT HAS.

What a joke the FLA (fair labor association) audit at the Alabama faciility is. The V.P. of human resources at new era crap, Tim (FEAR) Freer, is on the board of the FLA. Another case of the fox guarding the hen house. The company is run like a coeur d’alene cult. the corporate dogma is that the company is “all about it’s people”. most of the employees are miserable. if you really want to know what’s happening there go to the chippewa street bars in downtown buffalo during happy hour- you’ll get an ear full.
