Unique Trade Show Opportunity
Don Mahmood of Eklectik Genes has approached me with the idea of getting many of the startup clothing companies that visit Dobizo everyday involved in trade shows which is one of the first steps to getting your brand noticed and an important part of networking within the apparel industry.
Basically the idea is to offer discounted booth prices to trade shows that most startup clothing companies just cannot afford. Since we have so many startup companies from footwear to clothing that are a part of our Fashion Network we will be negotiating deals with trade shows to offer discounts for shared booth spaces for our members using his relationship with many of the fashion industry trade shows.
If your not an active member of the Fashion Network then you should join today. This opportunity will only be made available to Fashion Network members.
Please leave your thoughts/questions about this opportunity and other ideas for what you would like available to you from the Dobizo Network.
Also any company who knows they will take immediate interest in participating then send an email to fred@dobizo.com or reply in a comment.

hey, I am totally down with this if the show in any way can relate to kids.

I was just discussing this with my team, I want to attend Magic in August and would love to share booth space with another vendor since my line is new, still small and costs are an issue.

That would be AWESOME!!! Such a GREAT idea, DoBiZo! Please keep me posted and let me know what is necessary to be considered!!!

What about just doing a “Show Room” entry in the tradeshows and having the participating companies split the cost?
something like that.
That might be the most economical for all parties involved.

Mindtrix sounds like a great idea…I will pitch it to my partner in this deal and see what he thinks about it.
The reason I think we were doing it the way above is because it is more cost effective for us to buy a booth at different shows then to purchase a showroom because most are rented out for extended periods of times and a booth would allow us to work deals at different venues..from my knowledge, but I will see.
Thanks for your feedback

A show room is just a larger booth.
Most Shows will not allow you to share a booth. and if you are caught you get kicked out.
if you go in as a show room with multiple lines it will look better and you won’t get kicked out.
Just a thought.
January 14th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
Yeah regularly you would…but the person I’m working with has relationships with multiple trade shows because of his history in the fashion industry and we’re negotiating deals with them…as I type…
Also at certain shows the showrooms are usually rented for months and/or permanent at least some of the ones I have attended, but thanks for the feedback.

Just trying to help.
I have been going to tradeshows for a few years now.
Just sharing my experience.

No I didn’t mean that in a negative way…I definitely appreciate your feedback and input…

I personally think this is a horrible idea. The trade shows will have to think twice about it. How can they offer discount space or special deals to new brands? How will all of the current brands feel about this? It will saturate the trade shows with incubating brands taht are going into trade shows way to early in the game. If they can’t afford a trade show how can they afford all of the other expenses involved in properly developing a brand?
Getting discount trade shows will attract lots of unstable brands and brang havoc to the retailers. If you are attending, please make sure you will have the resources to get the stuff made, and that your brand will be around long enough to even make the deliveries…

Fantastic idea, and we’d definitely like to participate! Keep up the good work, Dobizo!

fashionguru-
Excuse me but I must have not read the part that said we will let any and every brand be part of this! Never would we do that…setting people up to fail.
This is kind of a hand in the door to start participating in trade shows.
Kind of like karmaloops kazbah for under developed brands or ones with less retail presence they help the smaller guys.
Same difference, but only time will tell how this pans out.

Fred,
I think you need to be straight up with many clothing companies about the overall suitabilty of trade shows to new brands and whether they should particpate at all. Many are under the impression that if they attend a show, they will write massive orders and they will go onto clothing industry stardom.
All too often, new companies are encouraged to participate in shows only to find they don’t write a single order. I think you need to focus on when, if at all, when a company should exhibit at any trade show.
Simply showing up at a trade show does guarantee success of any kind. You need to thoroughly research the practicality of the financial outlay very closely. In the end, you just might be wasting money.

I like the idea of sharing booth space at a tradeshow. I am no where near to participate in a big show by myself, however if there were smaller tradeshows to start and 2-3 business can split the time and cost would be a good thing.
There are definitely alot of questions that need answered and I eagerly await the responses.
January 16th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Well, I am definitely interested since cost is an issue.
However, I would like to see some of the concerns that others made mention here addressed, like whether a company is ready to attend a show or not. Is there anything in Dobizo regarding this topic? Thanks all!!
January 16th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Sexy Skins I understand your concerns and this is in no way a finished idea. It still has it kinks, but we will have requirements and guidelines that will be in place before we start accepting anyone into this ….I guess program. Just a way for us to give back.
I’m not in anyway getting any compensation from this little idea we are working on for the trade shows it is just my way of giving back to our community and hoping I can help more and more succeed…time will tell.

1).When would this offer be available?
2). I understand this is not a finished idea but, what would be some of the guidelines for the neebies?
3). Any particular industry tradeshows? Of course we’ve all heard of the magic. Any others?

i would like to hear more from you to elaborate on what you wrote because i and all the other newies around here need to know.
when you say that the costs would be huge if someone orders and that we need to make sure we are around to make the deliveries.
Could you fill in the blanks. in what way would it be bad if a starting out company got lot’s of orders from a show. Or, do you perhaps mean that a lot of people whom order from shows don’t pay up. Could you explain??

Here is something that I have done along these lines…..Contact complementing brands (for example we are a footwear brand, so I contacted a brand that just sells hats and a t-shirt brand) that go well with your brand and that you have a common target buyer. Register for a show under a “parent company” name. Then all of you share the cost of the booth space. The show really doesnt have a say in it because this goes down all the time. Think about the bigger companies that have many brands, its the same concept just on a smaller scale. If a show official questions it, you just tell them that you are all owned by a common parent company (the name that you registered for the show under) Dont worry about having a random name in the show directory the odds are no one knows who you are anyway. So now instead of having a 10×10 by yourself for 3K you can share a 20×20 for 2k. The best part is getting new accounts from the people you are sharing the booth with.
Really I dont see why you do a tradshow anyway (at least for the first couple years). Think about how many samples you could mail out for the cost of doing a show like MAGIC. Minimum with travel, housing, and show fees yo uare looking at $5k. If you are peddling t-shirts that cost $5 to make yo ucould send out a thousand samples direct to potential accounts. There is a lot better chance of getting a buyers attention doing that than sitting in a pathetic 10×10 booth and trying to get buyers attention while they are on their way to a metting with a more important brand.
anyway, just my 2 cents.

I agree MeinMind:
Getting out there and building accounts one by one in the beginning seems to be more effective…especially for those with low budgets and can’t afford all the pre-show marketing or a nice decorated booth to attract decent foot traffic.

This would be real beneficial to me as well since i’m not a major brand that can afford the high priced booth fees for some of the tradeshows.
