I was going to compile a list of different promotional tactics I’ve seen used and I still might depending on the response I get from our loyal readers, but I thought this exercise would be more beneficial from many people perspectives instead of just one.

So with the trade show season kicking off with Magic this past week I know many of you promoted before, during, and after the show and I personally want to hear your experiences from the show and what you did while there, before and after to promote your clothing line or to better your position within the apparel industry.

Please go into detail as much as possible and don’t be afraid to list your mistakes and ideas that didn’t work out as good as you thought. This will kind of be reminiscent of the Top 100 Mistakes Clothing lines Make article, but a positive spin. No matter how simple you think your tactics were PLEASE list them here because what is basic/minuscule in results to you could benefit another clothing company on the come up. (I will list them in the main article with a link back to your site)

I will start it off by listing some basic trade show promotional tactics and will add more as our readers respond:

  • Setting up appointments before hand can be one of the most important aspects of promoting and getting orders at a trade show
  • Calling up store buyers and/or personally introducing your clothing company to them and inquiring about the trade shows they will be attending
  • Sending out promotional postcards personally inviting buyers to come check out your booth prior to the show
  • Holding contest at your booth
  • Ad Placement within the trade show directory
  • Cross promote with a clothing line at each others booth. Make sure they don’t directly compete with your company maybe a complement to your clothing collections. (Footwear, hats, accessories)

Leave your promotional tactics and practices within the comment area and I will add them to the list with a link back to your website as a thanks for your participation.

In addtion to some of the above, I have used:

-a DJ playing a mix (including a jingle about Eklectik Genes) and announcing Eklectik Genes every so often.
-male models wearing product from the current season, being led around with female models wearing promo tee with the Eklectik Genes logo
-i also had the Official Eklectik tuner car at a couple of the shows
-free promo tees, printed promo towels, gift bags (with company logo)
-have a celebrity stop by the booth (meet n’ greet)

There are so many ways to promote, just depends on your budget.

I was able to visit MAGIC this year. I took in some other shows held in conjunction, and my overall impression this season, were visitors (read buyers) were way down over past years. Speaking with many exhibitors, I was told it may have been the slowest show in several years.

I did notice that exhibitors that employ models within their booth space seemed to be much busier trafficwise than those that were just displaying their apparel. It is known that styles show very well when on a human form and therefore a good reason to hire models.

As most of the models I saw were female, this obviously attracts themen more than the ladies. The lingerie area was particularly busy at certain points of the show. And I imagine much of the traffic in this specific venue were not lingerie nuyers.
