(Should I or should I not produce my own customized labels?)The above question comes up to me quite often from many soon to be entrepreneurs. It is a very good question and I will explain in detail what u should decide is best in your own individual situation with customized labels.
In my opinion this goes back to an article I discussed before about applying for a business license. I spoke about how if you want others to take your business venture serious apply for one and in this situation u should let your product speak for itself by having your own customized labels. Now I could stop right there and you should know the answer, but let?s dwell on the idea a little more.
Most companies choose not to produce their own garment labels because they think:
- Too expensive
- It?s a difficult task
- Just don?t know how
Let me tell u with C. that?s no excuse because when starting your own business there are many things you will not know how too do at first that?s why you?re an entrepreneur (take risk) most of the process is a learning curve from beginning to the end. B If you think that is difficult believe me this is only the beginning and it will all go down hill from there if that is all the dedication you have to show. Finally A. is where most entrepreneurs stop at and for good cause. Most clothing line start ups are undercapitalized and don?t have the necessary capital for what at first may seem like an extra too an already embellished garment. Labeling a garment is definitely not an extra it will be one of the steps to establishing your brand identity- How you want the consumer to perceive your product or your brand. If you don?t have a label or tag on your product it will look less like a brand and more like another customized garment. When a customer purchases your product u want he/she to know what their purchasing and what name too look for in future references.
Your company should produce garment labels because:
- Brand recognition
- Leads to referrals from consumers by name of brand
- Shows a certain level of professionalism within a branded company
This will lead to referrals to their friends about your brand, recognition for their future purchases, if your brand is performing well retailers talk and just might refer u too another store owner, and makes your brand look that much more professional and recognizable than all the other soon to be apparel lines with no labels in this crowded market!
If you?re just customizing shirts than not having a label might not be as important. You could make your brand name recognizable with just a tag in every design. In my opinion a label is just as important as the design on the shirt when starting a brand. A company should take careful consideration and choose the type, quality-(damask, satin, twill), and design/message on the label carefully and make sure it stands out. This also depends on what kind of line you are establishing.
Now that you have my opinion, make your own decision on how important a garment label is too your branded apparel. Take the first step by checking with some label manufacturers here on the Apparel Blog!

Also another thing you could do that is cheaper than getting all those labels made, would be to simply get a screen made of your label logo with the sizes included and then with each size shirt just black out the other sizes. It’s cheaper and easier on the scratchiness of labels.

Is there any information on removing labels from blank shirt suppliers and replacing with your own? Some sort of press or machine, or is it cheaper to have the screenprinter take care of it at 40 cents a shirt?

This is one of the most important factors that coincides with your clothing line. Tagless prints are effective but require screen changes for each size change. It’s a major pain for the printer and has a higher spoilage rate. Having a standard hangtag that reflects your brand essence is key. Relabeling strengthens your brand and also doesn’t reveal the origin of your shirt to a competitor.
Rudy: Anvil has a tear at seam shirt with perforated tags. Their are alot of great companies that cut and sew for cheaper than 40 cents.
