Email Alert! Last night right before finishing up for the day I always check my email and I had an email from one of our reader:
“can you touch on ways that you can send pieces to celebrities like many brands do for marketing and exposure purposes? How to go about it? Who to contact? and what other factors are associated with that”
Well first off in my opinion I don’t think there is any set way to go about getting celebrities to wear your clothes. For me myself it has happen many ways it all depends on where you live and what level of success your clothing line has achieved or financial backing of your brand.
If you have a very successful clothing line like Lrg or Five Four celebrities wearing your clothing is just as easy as me and you buying our clothes. I used to read the Five Four clothing blog and they have everyone from Denzel Washington to musicians that stop by their offices to get laced up with some Five Four gear on the daily! (Must be nice
) Sorry it isn’t that easy for all of us. I personally had more success with getting clothing to celebrities/musicians by attending video shoots while in Atlanta, Ga. Seeing that Five Four is located in California it is right there in the center of Hollywood so access to the celebrities is easier than let’s say South Carolina (where I now reside) where no stars come! All hope is not gone if you happen to live in the middle of nowhere also there are other ways of getting in contact with celebrities with a little creativity and persistence. All the ways listed below are tried and tested:
- Tv sitcoms and shows: Contact a station of a show that has actors you think would be interested in wearing your clothing. The best way is to find out who the stylist for the set is and have them give you an address to send some pieces too. Sending your clothing doesn’t guarantee their going to wear it you know the final decision is unfortunately up to the stars :(. Believe me what a stylist refers to them they will usually wear.
- Internet is a great way to get in contact with stylist. Some very popular stylist actually have their own websites for their companies and blogs also. Misa Hylton-Brim also stylist to the stars (Usher, Lil Kim amongst many others) has Chyna Doll Enterprises make sure and check out that website for contact information or her online boutique Madison Star Couture.
- Myspace is a great way to get clothes to celebrities believe it or not. I have had celebrities contact me on myspace about sending them free clothes (Of course free). So if you don’t have a myspace page for your clothing line get one now! I mean think about celebrities for the most part are not like you and I they wear what they want and set trends. If they like something you produced they want have any problems with accepting it for free. If your page is popular enough it is bound to get seen by someone. My page has over 20,500 pageviews and over 7,000 friends. Request Dobizo.com myspace page.
- Another way I went about approaching celebrities is sending them a note on myspace with a complement. I would say something of this matter: Love what your doing it is very inspirational and I think one of (insert your brand name) shirts would be a perfect addition to your clothing collection…I would’nt mind sending you one out free of charge to wear at your own convenience (Makes them feel like there isn’t any pressure). Hey! doesn’t work every time, but most will respond with an address and besides what do you have to lose, but a little time and maybe get carpal tunnel from typing all those notes.
For the most part getting a celebrity to wear your clothing either happens naturally with the growth and popularity of your line. Otherwise it happens financially through paid endorsements like most of the well backed or financed clothing companies that are willing to pay for a celebrity to wear their clothing brand. Some it is just who they know like clothing line Ryan Kenny owned by Ryan Glover, Kenny Burns, and Derek Dudley had celebrities wearing their clothes from day one, because of their connections within the music industry, plus one of the owners wife is a popular stylist by the name of Tamika Foster so getting in touch with famous people was only a phone call away. This goes to show you sometimes it is not what you know, but who you know!
Is there anyone who uses any similar methods to get in touch with celebrities? or any methods you would like to add?

Travel.Travel.Travel. I live in Austin , Texas. Most celebrities are very approachable. So if you travel to places that will have alot of the type of celebrities you’re looking for, you can talk to them there. I’m working on an urban/ streetwear sneaker, so of course i travel to events that have celebrities in this market. I haven’t asked them to wear my clothes as much as i’ve gotten their contacts and stylists’ names and numbers. In the past year i’ve been to the Ozone awards, Southern Entertainment awards, BET awards, The Magic Convention, Nba All-Star weekend, The Core Dj’s in Miami, Superbowl weekend, and a few celebrity athlete and rapper parties in Houston. I even got some girl groupie friends that always know about private celebrity bashes (these are a little harder to get in to). I will also be at the Oscar de la hoya fight on May 5th. Its not a matter of who i’ve seen, its who haven’t i’ve seen. To make a long story short… Just move around. Most events i go to are annual events. So, if you plan way ahead, it is very cheap to go. And Ceo, you got to get out of North Carolina . (just kidding). Although I don’t really make shirts unless for promotional items, i will tell you guys right now… it is easier to get at these celebrities with cut-n-sew items (hoodies, button-ups, denim). Everybody is giving them t-shirts. So if you’re giving them t-shirts, make sure its dope. its ya boy Hussel Premium signin’ off

I’ve only been to Atlanta one time and that was for the BET awards , but if i were to live anywhere besides Austin, Texas, …it would be Atlanta. I mean, i just smile thinking about it.

Great Article with very useful tips! It’s extremely important to network with fashion stylists. You want celebrities to wear your clothing and BE SEEN wearing your clothing.
Also, hooking up with lessor known fashion stylists is a great way to get free professional photos of your clothing line.

Hi,
First of all, I found your website to be very informative. I have thousands of custom designs on paper. I have so many ideas as far as type of garment, color, fabric, brand name, etc.
But I don’t know how to launch my line.
