With all the new clothing lines launching every second it’s kind of hard too categorize every brand into one category. Even though classifications such as juniors, street wear, urban, couture, and sportswear continue too divide every clothing brand into their rightful category. You still can’t deny the crossover appeal of brands such as Lrg clothing, Ralph Lauren Polo, 10 Deep, Levi’s, and even Evisu….which is not a brand that considered the urban consumer as a core customer (Fashion Fact..lol).
Even though most designers would probably think otherwise, but until popular rappers, celebrities, actors, or whatever are caught wearing their fashions by the common person all they have is a theme and a target market. If you ever notice that no matter how hard a brand may go after a target market all it takes is the right public figure too wear a brand and its core consumer can be changed or can be expanded too a crossover appeal. Take Tommy Hilfiger at its height in popularity it was worn by all consumers of different shapes and sizes and he publicly said that his target audience wasn’t African Americans…which at one point was one of his main supporters. I’m pretty sure you can see some truth too what I speak as most clothing companies release free product to public figures in hopes they will wear it and be seen by millions of adoring fans who are willing too spend money on anything their favorite actor, singer, comedian, rapper or whatever likes.
I’ve noticed also how most street wear brands are trying too stay within a league of their own being exclusive and underground when most of their designs are being worn by the so-called “urban” consumer. Now they are getting attention from the masses and are not so secluded and street wear is going too become just as corporate as the urban clothing counterparts that they love to hate. You might have a few who stick to their guns and not “sell out” , but for the most part aren’t we in the business of fashion because it’s just that a business and they GROW.
In my opinion you should just start YOUR clothing company and design what YOU like…as long as your not too out of the box there are other people who would like your style of clothing. Target your consumer….if others like it SO WHAT. That’s exactly why brands like Lrg clothing reach the height of success that they have….their building on a lifestyle all that apply can join
