Developing a Line Sheet:
Line Sheets play an important part in any start up companies? sales. It could be the reason u don?t receive an order or the reason that u do. I?m going to discuss ways to make sure u get that order which could be at a tradeshow or through an informative email to the buyer of the store u are wanting to retail in.
First let?s go through a couple of must haves on a line sheet:
- Of course your line!
- Price
- Size
- Availability (when can it be shipped)
- Description fabric/details/trims
- Address & Number (if your going to be handing them out or giving them away)
- Product Order Numbers (Takes the pain out of reorders)
Mainly when organizing a line sheet make sure and include any info the retailer would want to know?.don?t leave them asking questions from info that could have been included in the line sheet. A lot of the info is common sense for any fashion company so it?s not hard it just takes thought and it is some of the grunt work of being in the fashion business.
There are many of ways to construct your line sheet?I have seen some that are graphic based from Illustrator or Photoshop. Some lines use real photos which can be more helpful when sending an email but since your going to be at a tradeshow with your garments at hand (hint) the graphic layout will do just fine. Below is a pic of one of my partners first line sheets which they made for a tradeshow in Atlanta, Ga Men?s Alpha www.americasmart.com.

Remember this is one of their first?.so go easy on them, but it?s actually not that bad. The graphics are clean besides a couple of blemishes and they seem to have most of the information that I mentioned above. Notice the order numbers on each product which helps when writing orders at tradeshow and is speedy for reorders. Also how they have the close up of the main graphic which is always good to see the product detail. There is many ways to create a line sheet this will help u get started with the basics and add your own twist to make it that much more interesting!
Here is a pic of Lrg line sheet sketches before they were LRG!

Great post! I am in this process currently. Would you advise paying someone or doing it yourself?

Very Helpful

This is good information, thanks.
But hey, why do so many clothing brands, like the one above, only sell shirts sizes XL and up?

Drew…..it all depends on the category of clothing. Many urbanwear and streetwear brands make clothing in larger sizes to appeal to that market that usually wears baggy fit clothing. With premium and contemporary categories, your bound to find s-xxl, for the fashionable fit wearers. But, it all depends on the target market of the particular brand.

Thanks for all of the wonderful information on this site.
I am in the process of marketing my new line of bags - but
I am having some trouble with the line book / line sheet.
Could you tell me if it would be o.k. to write a letter with all the
information on my product & send regular pictures I have taken
along with this letter? Will this not look professional or does that
matter when you are first starting out? I am trying to start off small
and not spend a lot of money until my product takes off. Please
advise the steps you would take.

When sending a letter to a buyer via email: should you send the letter in the body of the email or should have the letter as an attachment with your photos? The reason I am asking is that the letter to me looks a lot more professional with a letterhead on a full sheet of paper. Please let me know your opinion - I am sending the first letter out tomorrow.

I would do both…just in case they prefer one way over the other

Is there a difference with accessory line sheets and fashion? I have a jewelry line I am putting a line sheet together for, and I am finding information mostly on clothing. SHould I follow these guidelines or is there something different I should be looking at doing? Thanks so much!
