When starting a clothing line the cheapest way usually isn’t the most productive or will not spun the best results for your efforts.
Something I noticed amongst many indie clothing brands is to get a Myspace or social networking profile and most have no plan of establishing a more traditional web presence. This is a good choice as a short term alternative, but what impression will you give to a buyer when you tell them to go to http://www.myspace.com/(insert your clothing brand) to check out your clothing line or what if they want to get in touch with you? Many people do, but everyone doesn’t have a Myspace page neither do they want one.
First off Myspace is a social-networking site and many use it to promote and network with friends and family, but business is just that business. It looks more professional to have a website that is branded with your company name and in order to find information about your clothing or where to contact a person I don’t want to look through comments from your girlfriend, boyfriend and spam from Myspace promotion ( I have to do it on the daily for Pick of the Day). Myspace should be used as an alternative and nothing more. If your website is under construction at least have the domain bought and have a landing page that says coming soon and than direct them to your Myspace page.
Simply said it goes back to a quote I heard “If you’re selling your clothing line out the back of your trunk than most likely it will look like a clothing line that is being sold out the back of a trunk”. If you look at Myspace more than 50% of the people on there that call themselves clothing line owners have nothing more than a sketchbook and a dream, and there is nothing wrong with that, but why mix your line in with the bunch without having a more professional alternative and have a store owner or a possible business partner make an opinion about what you really have to offer before taking the time to really let you show them what you got.
I expect this with indie clothing brands that are just starting out (1-2 years old), but when you see brands that have been established for years with advertisements in popular magazines advertising there new collection just to find out all they have is a Myspace page! (Ever heard of Cyber squatting) It doesn’t take that much to register a domain name and hosting no more than $10.99 through Godaddy. If you’re going to put forth ad dollars for an advertisement (Valued at $thousands) wouldn’t you have the capital to invest in a website? Just doesn’t seem like they have their ducks in a row. After seeing the advertisement I had no choice, but to write an article about it, because the company is heavily back due to their connections in the industry and prior history. You may have heard of School of Hard Knocks or Sohk one of the original innovators in the urban fashion industry, but they fell off and should of ended up on Clothing Company One Hit Wonders.
I mean many of you may disagree, but think about it this way if you’re business has plans to move production overseas or is sourcing for a new manufacturer would you choose the contractor with a professional site with all their services and benefits listed in plain sight on their homepage or the one that directs you to their Myspace and wants you to look at some of the work they said they’ve done in their pictures
.
By investing in a website it just shows how serious you’re about your business and its future in the fashion industry. Not that Myspace isn’t good for a clothing company, because I’ve wrote some articles about how you can take advantage of its massive user base.
