I was thinking about adding a new category on to How to start a clothing line from scratch weblog for fashion internships. Basically I would post the availability of different opportunities for apparel entrepreneurs to intern for different companies in the fashion industry. First I would like to know your experience with internships and I also want to discuss a few of my concerns with interning for a fashion companies and the experiences I’ve had.
Mainly my fashion internship experience were with street wear clothing companies and fashion magazines or promotional street teams. I have worked in various internships during my college years in Atlanta, Ga. Mostly were fashion lines and some were just in the fashion industry, but not directly dealing with clothing companies.
From my encounters it seemed as though most really wanted someone they could use to do the grunt work like filing papers, making copies, and answering customer inquiries. This day and age I could imagine someone hiring an intern just to run there Myspace page or handle various social networking accounts for them
. (…hmm!) To me my fashion internship experiences were equivalent to being the water boy for the sports team. You work all day but never take on any real action or gain any real experience. Maybe I bailed out to quick on the companies and didn’t give them a chance, but because I have always had a go-getter attitude I couldn’t wait around to see if they were using me or if they were going to really use me, you know put me out in the field for some real world experience. I have heard of some good experiences that designers have had from working with some companies…mostly abroad. They actually got the chance to get there hands dirty and do more than keep the coffee coming. I would say if you’re going to intern for a clothing company then go for the independent clothing companies who are coming up and offer internships like the 10 Deeps, or The Hundreds or Parish Clothing. If I’m not mistaken 10 Deep has some internship opportunities available.
As of now 10 Deep?has internships available in apparel design, sales & marketing, web and other general fashion industry internship positions. So head on over there and tell them Dobizo sent you and maybe they will send some sponsorship money…
.

I think fashion internships need to be clearly defined, for the benefit of both parties. You should have some form of written description about the internship and outline expectations as well as set guidleines
You should also include some form of reporting sytem or progress report so that eveyone knows how this internship is progressing and set aside a time for review. You willl be surprised at how many companies do not have a formal reporting format for internships or work study as it is known in some circles. To me that just means they are looking for “waterboys” or people to do menial tasks.
On the plus side. many that do implement good internship policies can learn much from students enrolled in the program. A good structured system will be beneficial to both student and apparel company if the right approach is taken.

I definitely agree with you Thom on having some form of reporting system and outline…it would serve as a way to know what to expect out of your internship and the same for the company.
Great job with the Forums
