When starting a clothing line finding stores to sell in might seem like one of the task at the bottom of your list, but it actually takes a lot of much needed time. You could be doing something much more productive if your looking through phone books or traveling store to store, which is the most tedious way of finding a store that is targeted toward your customer. It’s kind of hard knowing all the underground mom & pop stores that would actually take on a new line when living in a small town like Anderson, South Carolina, which is where I’m originally from. So I had to take matters into my own hands ;).

It’s actually easier than you think and less time consuming. For some of my long time readers you can remember the articles I wrote on calling buyers and following up with an email and how you can land accountswithout ever leaving the house. My first account was in a Chicago store named Essex 5 and I lived in Atlanta,Ga at the time. You can read more about how I landed my first account with no-money up front and what to include when emailing store buyers in those previous articles. Basically to find stores that are catered to your clothing lines target market is just think about your favorite clothing line and if they target the same market you are selling too, also find your competition (You will most likely sell in the same stores) and go to their website. Yes its that easy, but that’s not the end. If you noticed most stores have a store locator, retailer locator, or stores we sell at…on their website. The locator usually list store numbers, location, sometimes a contact and a website. I’m pretty sure you know what to do from there follow the steps of the articles I listed previously in this one. An example of one I could have used since I was catering to the urban market is from Algierz Clothing based out of Texas. If your a street wear clothing line try this locator on 3sixteens’ website or this one from 10 deep clothing. If the phone number isn’t included its as easy as going to Yahoo locals and typing in the name/state…if you can’t find it still there’s always 411!

Test it out on some different markets of clothing like maternity wear or juniors clothing or even a sneaker/shoe company like Greedy Genius and let me know how it plays out.
