Batz Says:
Hello ,Dobizo I am a designer, What is the best way to produce hoodies? right now I buy brand name hoodies, decorate and sell them. I would like to have my own “hoodie” made or buy generic hoodies but I cannot find anything better than very poor quality. My goal is to produce my own hoodie based on my designs and have them manufactured. any advice?
BatzHow can I take my hand made one off prototypes to a manufacturer to be reproduced?
do I need to submit the design elements individually, or can I submit the garment to the manufacturer as is. do you know a good source for all over printing?
Well Batz if you’ve been reading the Dobizo blog like you’re suppose to you should have seen the review of Independent Trading Company a wholesale and custom sweatshirt, and hoodie manufacturer. Take a look at the review by going here.
As far as what’s the best way to produce hoodies it really depends on what resources and how much capital you have openly available to your business. If you have enough money to do so I would without any hesitation get my own custom cut & sew hoodies it will distinguish your business from the thousands of others doing the same thing your company is doing…using blanks.
If you have prototypes already produced then you have done the hardest part and thats getting a sample and now you will need to communicate exact specifications if the current prototype isn’t the size cut that you want your hoodies produced in. If it is then all you have to do is provide the fabric contents and any other details about hoodie that you want included that is where a tech pack will come in handy. If you have a pattern to the prototype that will come in handy otherwise you will have to have one made so that the manufacturer will have something to work from, but if you have a prototype than you should be able to squeeze the pattern out of your previous manufacturer for a fee of course.

I would imagine that if Batz had prototypes made, he? would have needed a pattern made and most likely paid for. It forms the foundation of any protype or sample run.
Generally the pattern belongs to the paying customer and if the paying customer asks for it, it should be given to them. All too often new companies get charged for having original patterns made , only to find the pattern was created from a block that has been in existence forever. If you pay for a pattern, it’s yours. No extra fees should apply.
As for Batz’ displeasure over the lack of good quality hoodies, you really need to look harder, because some real good suppliers of blank hoodies are out there. You need to focus on fabric quality first.Weight and yarn type are important. Look for key words like ringspun, combed, soft handfeel, gently washed.. Brands like FOTL or Anvil can make some crappy quality blanks while Russell Athletics as an example make some higher end product.
You need to expand your horizons when looking for better quality goods. If you choose to go the custom route, ask the manufacturers about using quality materials and ask to see swatches.
Ever wonder why you can buy a blank white t-shirt for $ 1.00 ? Because that is what it is worth.
I like Fred’s advice about distinguishing yourself from all the others doing the same old. Good insight.

I think I would have told them not to bother with hoodies, they are horrible items of clothing!

independent trading company is great, but sizes run really big. these are full cut. i mix the womens with mens small sizes if you’re trying to stay with a slim fit band type of look.

I think it is time for the return of the hoodie to be a trendy item of clothing rather than that garment worn by muggers and the like. Finding creatively made and fashionably trendy hoodies would seem to be the way to go. Good luck Batz!

If you use Independant Trading to make your apparel, you tell them (or in this case show them) exactly how you want your styles to fit. That is the whole point of doing custom.
If you think the cut of their standard hoody is full, make sure your custom styles are different and made to your specifications. It’s as simple as that.
