Thank God for emails, because without them I wouldn’t have come up with what I think is going to be my best series of articles yet! Many of you have contacted me asking similar questions one of them being What’s the first step I should take after deciding to start a clothing line? The other being random questions that I have answered mulitple times throughout the blog and are within the dark cave known as my blog archives or categories. I understand consuming or searching for that much information can be very tiresome.

So I came up with the idea of writing a small, but in depth guide on starting a clothing line and I was going to release it as one big article or as a pdf format for your downloading pleasures. After working on it and realizing how long it could potentially be I knew not too many would sit around on my blog and read the article. Most would probably bookmark it and read it piece by piece while others would miss it do to the way a blog updates in descending order!

I decided to something I haven’t seen done as far as writing a guide or small freE-book is concerned. I am going to write the guide and will be posting the content as I finish each part. Most articles will be around 600-1,500 word range, but each will definitely be infomative. I will be editing each article as you read along while I am creating the guide and will update you as each article updates. I’m not sure how long the guide will be by the time I’m finished, but in order to make it the best possible I wanted to take my time with it and just couldn’t keep you guys waiting and otherwise would have rushed to put it out. By the time it is finished we may have enough content for a couple of books! or not…lol. Once I write the final article I will condense it into one pdf file for you to download and share with anyone you please…FREE of charge of course. Reading my blog is thanks enough. So here is the first entry into In Depth Step by Step Guide to Starting a Clothing Line for Fashion Designers.

To my knowledge this is the first ever In Depth Step by Step Guide to Starting a Clothing Line of its kind. This series is going to help you with taking the first step after you decide to start a clothing brand until the creation of your first garment. Unlike other step by step guides I am going to incorporate my journey of how I started my clothing line into a format that is informational and easily understood by any human being interested in starting a clothing company. Throughout the guide I will take and make references to different sources or articles from the web mostly from my blog How to start a clothing line from scratch better known as Dobizo.

Have you ever started a clothing line before? If your answer is no then keep reading. If your answer is yes than still keep reading no matter how knowledgeable a person may be on a subject being reminded of the little things we forget along the path to greatness are priceless. I for one appreciate the little nuggets of knowledge that my readers present on my blog everyday, plus it helps to get me going in the morning. When your faced with the everyday uncertainties of a clothing business any extra motivation is worthwhile.

So you decided that you want to start your own fashion empire. Now what’s next? A question I have been asked more times thatn I care to count by readers of Dobizo and beyond. I would say there is no definite first step to take once you make that plunge from a 9-5 to full-time or part time designer entrepreneur. What I can offer you is the step I took, which was to set the foundation of my business by learning as much as possible about the fashion industry, plus important steps to starting and running any business for that matter. Industry specific information can be found in many places and more than one resource should be used when researching also comparing while learning, because all information (especially online) is not relevant or reliable.

Researching & Information

  • Networking- The most valuable information can be found by networking with people in the fashion industry giving you insight and a front row seat in watching how the business of fashion works. Meeting and greeting can potentially lead to future business relationships that would help along the way and great contacts for securing internships, which are valuable learning experiences that cannot be found in any book or fashion school you could attend.
  • School-You can always take beginner courses on entrepreneurship and business or fashion design. If your not in a rush and you want a wealth of knowledge than pursuing a degree in Fashion Design & Marketing or any other fashion related field can be a viable option for information and learning. From my experience college doesn’t prepare you to run a business, but teaches you the fundamentals of the fashion industry (Patterns, marketing, design software, fashion design, and finance). They could help get you on your way to a career in the fashion industry working under a successful design house, but here you will learn about my experiences not school lessons.

Make sure and save room for Article 2 of the series

I would love to have your feedback on what topics you would like to see covered and I will discuss each to the best of my knowledge.

    Hey there Fred,
I?d like to extend my heart felt appreciation for responding to my post so promptly; I COULDN?T BELIEVE IT! You responded very promptly (Within 2 hours of my post). I made my post, left the office to run some errands and when I returned I was right back on Dozibo.com and sure enough you had a written ?I Have to Confess the Real Reason I write Dobizo?. In addition to that you left a link from my comment to my website; that was awesome; I was literally lost for words. If leaving a comment will encourage you to continue the outstanding work your doing, I?ll leave a comment everyday. I?ve been married to this site since I?ve found it. It?s all I?ve been talking about to my lady, she feels like I?m cheating on her. It?s 5:00 am in the morning, Dobizo.com actually woke me up out of my sleep. I was reading 10 Reasons You Will Never Be Successful the other day, and I felt like you were talking directly to me. Dozibo.com has revitalized my zest for attacking my task, because over the last 4 days I?ve had more questions answered than I have over the last 4 years. I?ve referred to Frequently Asked Questions Everyday since I?ve found this site. This certainly will not be the last time you hear from me Fred. And if there is anything I can do to aid you in your movement please let me know. I would love to be a part of what you?ve created. I see no limit to my success due to Dobizo.com. This is the encyclopedia of The Fashion industry!

    Eternally Thankful,
    Sheldon Browne
