Part of this answer is directed toward Sky clothing because they asked the following question:

I have an ecommerce site www.myshopkart.net/skysclothing and would like to know some inexpensive ways to promote it and build from there. My goal is to have a sister site that sells funky and rare urban wear that builds from the ecommerce because money is tight. I did go to school for fashion design and obtained my associates degree, but as you said you really don?t learn what you need to from it. Any suggestions?

My first suggestion would be for you to setup an independent store away from the Myshopkart system by hosting your own site with the unique domain of www.skyclothingboutique.com and having your store dependent on there system and your options to promote wouldn’t be as limited. It will look more professional and you could build up your own domain not working hard promoting only to have to move over to your own unique domain after you have put in all the hours building up theirs!

Secondly use the search tool on this website! There are already plenty of articles on promoting online and offline for a clothing company that can apply to promoting your clothing store online. You just have to take advantage of what is made available to you and put in a little ground work. So many are quick to email someone and wait for a reply when the information is already on the website. Sorry for ranting :0

Here are a few articles that you can start with below:

Promoting or advertising your clothing line on a budget.

Marketing Power of Free Word Of Mouth.

When promoting online I would say that a product or store blog and press release/announcements from other websites or blogs are your best friends. When launching the Fashion Network I made use of the Dobizo blog plus hundreds of other blogs I emailed a press release to announcing the beta launch and you can do the same thing. Just find blogs within your niche and go from there if the items in your store are relevant to there readers they will be glad to let them know about your online shop.

Of course having your own unique domain is a way to promot your stuff better! Instead of everytime you tell someone to check out your stuff they have to go to another site with your name after whatever the name of the actual site is, for example http://www.myspce.com/1234 Its good in the senes that you have some way to show your stuf but its best to have your own domain. And if you are going to have another site where you stuff can be looked at at least make sure its free, the idea was to save money right?
