This is definitely a touchy subject that I’m very interested in since the apparel industry loses more than a billion dollars on a global basis annually due to counterfeits and bootleggers. That is a lot of money being stole out the pockets of apparel company’s.

AAFA the American Apparel and Footwear Association is ready to do something about it by raising awareness on the situation through their annual conference on November 6-7, 2007 in Long Beach, California at The Westin hotel.

Some of the subjects will touch on:

  • Economics of Counterfeiting
  • Stop It Before It Enters: Attacking Counterfeit by Partnering with Government
  • Protecting Your Brand On A Global Scale
  • IPR’s Impact on the Human Condition
  • Brand Protection Strategies - panel presentation
  • Understanding the Ins and Outs of Design Piracy

One of the key speakers is head of Intellectual Property Rights for Adidas footwear Ray Tai. He will discuss Adidas IPR strategies and its retail/marketplace approach.

Attendees will also get to experience a tour of the Container Examination Station at the Port of Long Beach. This tour will be lead by Customs and Border Protection of the US Department of Homeland Security. You will learn about IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) screening and identification also how to understand the enforcement process from selection to the seizure of goods as well as a discussion of paperwork submission and processes that enhance enforcement.

There will only be 60 guest allowed for the tour. If you would like to be one of them register today! Deadline is Tuesday October 16, 2007

That is definitely a big deal within the footwear and apparel industry. I see more of my friends wearing knockoffs then the official brand! About as bad as the music industry if not worse.

  2. Jay Gray Says:

    it’s a big deal.. but it can’t b stopped..since the beginnin’ of time u have had it.. real & fake…have and have not’s….. u would have a betta chance stoppin’ bootlegg’d dvd’s or cd’s….

  3. Jay Gray Says:

but a good start is jus stayin’ 2 steps ahead.. do your homework.. purchase the best fabrics .. seek out those stand out designer’s…. make it harder 4 them.. make it not worth them bootleggin’…

Glad to see the AAFA so concerned about the welfare of large American clothing and footwear companies.

A lobby group, that only has the interests of large business at hand. Do you think they give a shit if someone knocks off The Hundreds or Scout Union ? Do you think they care the US textile business is on life support ?

It’s only when it’s large members sqwauk about being knocked off do they leap into action and start rehearsals for the next public performance.

They do absolutely nothing for small business. They help form policy enabling large US companies to produce cheaply in low cost nations. It is one agency/ club that has gotten out of hand. They could care less if small apparel companies existed, as small apparel companies take sales away from their mega size members.
They should be ashamed of what they have done.
