I’ve been reading a lot about new pop up retail store concepts. Basically a moving, collapsible retail store that is nothing more than a few walls and of course a cash register. The UK and Japan were some of the first to adopt this concept and the United States is following suit with their own pop up retail store concept. I could see it working wonders for smaller designers to just rent out space on a busy street and display their designs for the passing public and with good targeting and marketing you could build the awareness of your clothing company.
Just recently in Chinatown, Los Angeles a new store called New High (M) art opened by Miho Ikeda a former stylist and the creative director for other brands. The store is a 300 foot pop up retail space that is renting out the space to various designers and artist to showcase their clothing or wares to passing consumers with one-off pieces and full collections for a selected time slot.
What do you think about the concept of a pop up retail store? Is it a sound business model for a retail store? or is it just another adopted/passing trend or can it have some stability and become part of the everyday fashion retail concept?

A trend? Probably. But maybe not. This could be done effectively for designers if they kept focused with what they wanted out of their pop up retail store, and how it was going to look and function for them. Definetly cost efficient and could be potentially lots of fun!

Would this be similair to a plain old street vendor ? No wait, you now have a roof and surrounding walls. It sounds pretty transient to me. Here today, gone tommorrow.
I would assume all necessary permits would be taken care of, and I am not surprised it is happening first in Chinatown, the birthplace of apparel street vending. I don’t see it lasting.

Yeah Thom…does kind of seem like a glorified street vendor…maybe I should wait to see pictures before passing that judgment?

Yeah, I was going to say, I would love to see a youtube video or some great photos of transactions and or the set-up/designing of the booth.
