As you we all know nothing says trust like hearing a review of a company by an actual friend or co-worker….another person. I thought of some things that I do now and should have did back then that creates a buzz about your clothing company without you spending hundreds of dollars on traditional avenues of promotion. Word of mouth works like no other rather it’s positive or negative the word will spread, because well people talk. You get a little by giving a little by using this method. It’s very practical and most should be able to do it. First let’s discuss some of the paid opportunities for getting the word out about your new wonderful clothing line on and off the internet.

Internet opportunities:

  • Sponsoring a popular blog or website that targets your potential consumer. Example buying an ad on http://www.dobizo.com and paying a monthly fee for a banner or text link.
  • Paid search engine advertisement is another way if you have a website or online store this method could be very effective, but probably would give you the best ROI (Return On Investment)
  • Adwords which is purchasing Google keywords for placement on sites and blogs or forums who audience might be interested in what your clothing company has to offer.

non-internet promotions:

  • Sponsoring local events or companies. Supporting raffles and participating in giveaways. Just another way to get your clothing labels brand name out and give it a positive outlook to the community. Wrote an article about sponsorships http://www.dobizo.com/promotion/promoting-for-dummies/
  • Paid ads in print magazines, newspaper articles. Depending on the magazine your working with advertisements can get expensive. Best bet would be to contact the editor of the style section and submit some free samples you would come out cheaper.
  • Flyer distribution services. I don’t know how familiar many of you are with this type of business, but I was introduced to them while working in Atlanta, Ga. Basically they will distribute your flyers to a certain area, at a certain time, and a targeted group of people while trying to get the flyers into the hands of x amount of people depending on what you paid for.
  • Almost forgot about endorsements. Paying a celebrity figure to wear your clothing line multiple times in exchange for free clothes, or something of monetary value. This method can too get rather on the expensive side.

All the above ways are great and are the more commonly used by larger clothing companies. What I was speaking of in the opening sentence is word of mouth and in our case positive word of mouth. What I used to do and still try and squeeze a few in from time to time is speaking with a group of people or placing myself as a professional or knowledgeable in a certain area of my business industry. Mainly speaking with school kids about entrepreneurship and squeezing tidbits about my clothing company in during the presentation. Depending on the consumer your clothing lines target would be who you might want to speak for or share your business journey with. In my small city of Anderson, SC there were many outlets for it. We have a business group that meets up weekly and they host events for professionals to speak about business…your business.

High schools, colleges, are everywhere and will gladly accept someone who is willing to speak as a working business in a industry for FREE of course. Don’t charge because there are other ways of making money in the long run direct and indirect.

After your seminar or session or whatever you could have a setup to sale your clothing garments at a discounted rate. You could hand out flyers or have students distribute them for you to classmates as part of you coming to discuss your business industry with them. Also if you leave them with a good impression of your business they will talk about you to friends and families. Most likely they will request for your clothing in local stores and visit your website to find out more about you. Great way to find interns (They will work free for the experience). It’s also a good angle to pitch for a newspaper article “Entrepreneur Shares Journey With Inner City Youth” and gives your business a positive outlook from consumers in your area, but whatever you get the picture…lol. You don’t have to be the best in your field to speak about your industry publicly as long as you are being truthful with your audience and sharing real experiences….pretty much like I try and do on dobizo.com everyday. Best of all it cost you $0 and it is very affective.

Have any of you ever spoken publicly about your business or its successes and failures? If so share your experience.
