You know sometimes things don’t come to my mind until I see some kind of sign or somebody says something to remind me. While cruising through the forum I came across the question of “Where can I get help on writing a business plan”. A very open question, but they also stated they wanted step by step or somebody to simply write it for them. Since they were writing a business plan on starting a urban clothing store for women’s. My advice to them was to speak with some local retailers on how they started their retail clothing store and the process they went about preparing and writing a business plan. The last thing I told them was check with www.sba.gov and see if their was a local facility where they could visit.

If you aren’t familiar with the SBA it is the US small business administration. The SBA helps Americans start, build, and grow businesses. They have all types of free advice, tools, and professionals their for your business needs. When I first started a business and had no idea of how to write a business plan. I heard about them through a mutual friend and paid them a visit. They offered me a counselor who you setup meetings with and will help you with every aspect of your business from financing to selling. The best thing about it all is that it of course is free and they have real world experience, because they are retired business owners. The counselors are willing to walk you step by step through the planning, writing and executing your business plan….for free. The office I visited was located in Atlanta, Ga if I was in Anderson, South Carolina….I would have been out of luck. Many people just don’t take advantage of the free resources that you can find in your home town or over the Internet. So contact your local office today and get started on your business plan today, because you now have NO excuses.

How many of you prepared business plans before starting your clothing business?

Another potential outlet is to go to a local university. There are some very bright business students who will gladly do your business plan just for the experience. Just a thought…

I just made an appt with SCORE (the actual group through which the SBA does the biz plan counseling) and will meet with a former VP at Stride-Rite (my former employer) to go over my biz plan. You’re absolutely right, that it needs to be given to a professional so that they can give it a once over. Typically, a faculty member will do that for them (or recommend someone to whom they can take it).
