I’m just getting back into the groove of designing apparel and graphics. As you may know I’ve put my clothing line Scout Union Apparel on hold while I develop the Dobizo Network.
I plan to relaunch it in full force with a better team, more financing, and a solid foundation. Right now I have started to get back into the design process and feeling out the different programs I’m accustomed to working with Photoshop and Illustrator so far.
I know for a fact that here on How to start a clothing line from scratch we have many readers that design handbags, women apparel, children’s wear and much more. All of them probably have their own way of going about what theme to pull their design inspirations from and a way to get these creative juices flowing.
That is exactly what I wanted to talk about today how do you get your design inspirations. Do you use themes or is your clothing company based around a certain lifestyle and you pull your designs, graphics, or prints from that culture.
Think how Parish designs are inspired by the retro culture or lifestyle. The Hundreds draw inspiration from the Los Angeles Lifestyle / California Culture. Lines like Juicy Couture who focus on mixing comfort with style at a premium price….either way you still have to design accordingly keeping all aspects of why your line is in existence in mind.
I know when designing for my clothing line I try and do anything that is not directly related to the fashion industry, because that is usually when I come up with my best ideas. The above is another reason why I always carry a pad with me because I’m an artist at heart and most of my designs come from sketches or ideas while I’m out and about.
I usually hit Books A Million for hours with a pen and a pad writing down different ideas that come about as I scour through the book and magazine aisles….in the process I also pick up a few ideas for Dobizo.
It can take me anywhere from a day or two to a week to completely finish a graphic mock-up of a garment design. It really depends on what I’m designing and how intricate the details.
What kind of programs do you design with? Photoshop, Illustrator, or any CAD systems?
How do you go about the creative process and how many work hours do you put into a design?

THE PROCESS I GO THROUGH IS BETTER DESCRIBED AS STRENUOUS. I ACTUALLY ENJOY THE BUSINESS SIDE OF STARTING A CLOTHING LINE MORE THAN THE DESIGNING PROCESS…STRESSES ME OUT.
SOON AS I CAN I WILL HAVE AN IN HOUSE DESIGNER OR FREELANCE…RATHER HAVE IN-HOUSE.

Casual Prospect, I am not sure what your clothing line aesthetic is, but you can definitely find someone with the designer touch, artistic talent, etc. to complete the design aspect of your business. For instance, although the CEO/Creative Director of Iceland & Powder is an artist by trade, he paid several other people in the neighborhood of $100 or so to come up with a few looks a piece for his line, which (by the way) have not progressed any further than a few samples being made. Now THAT is expensive!!!
