I was just researching some new clothing companies and footwear companies for the Pick of the Day slot.

Come to find out that half of the companies I wrote down have a website, but it is not active! Now I understand if you are in the middle of changing over for the season or down temporarily, but most of these companies I found in magazines where it clearly said for more info check out our site at www. (insert your brand).com…so that is exactly what I did.

It really doesn’t make sense to me, but maybe I’m going overboard. If you are going to advertise in a major magazine with your website info in bold print for the world to see…WOULDN’T YOU MAKE SURE IT IS ACTIVATED! At least some pictures or a downtime message or anything.

Most of these had nothing more than a front page with their logo stating the clothing companies’ name. Some of them were thoughtful enough to leave emails or press citing, but not most.

To me it seems like if you spend thousands of dollars on advertising you would want your clothing business to be going full speed ahead and a presence on the web is very important considering how much time many people spend online nowadays.

I don’t know maybe they are trying to gain some publicity and get the name out first before launching the site or build customer anticipation.

I guess I can just write this one off since they did give me another idea for a topic!

What is your opinion on advertising or a clothing companies web presence?

Having a great web presence is extremely important. The great thing about the internet is that it is a level ground media for all businesses. You can be a garage-operated business but with an appealing and great web presence, you can appear to be a million-dollar company. Websites are an extension of your business card. It should adequately reflect the company vision and portray the appropriate image you want for your brand. Another factor to consider is the usage of colors for your website. Look into color psychology when choosing your brand colors as well as web colors.

Since most people SHOULD, and some do, look to the internet nowadays for more information on a product, service or whatever…they should definitely step their game up in the IT department. I personally believe that more than half your costs should go into advertising. However, when that is not possible (and it usually is) brands need to put their thinking caps on, get really creative, and think waaaayyy outside the box for free or cheap advertising. Why spend all that money on a mag advertisement and not follow through?!?! Sounds to me like they are putting the cart before the horse.

Having a parked website proclaiming the virtues of your line, coming soon, launching 2040..etc…
this does far more harm than good. From a consumers standpoint, from the apparel industries standpoint. In a industry that is fueled by hype, people tend to think,” oh boy here we go again again, another company with all talk no action”. Many of these parked websites never go on to produce a stitch of clothing.

As IcelandPowder says, and perhaps understates the importance of the Internet, people need to be definitely step up the importance of IT as their website presence is reflective of your product and who you chose to sell to.

A one page on-line business card will not get repeat visitors .
