Depending on the crowd and market that you want to reach, each clothing line will have their own way of making money.(That’s the reason businesses exist right?) Whether its hand to hand or over the internet or straight to the consumer through your own store front. One way or another you will have to setup a distribution channel for your clothing line.

Why you say? Well because without one how are you going to diversify your clothing lines way of getting your final product to the consumer. How you go about setting up distribution channels all depends on the market and the perception you want the consumer to have of your brand. For example sell out the back of your trunk…:) automatically consumers aren’t going to take you serious and will think it’s low quality even though that might not be the case. Plus when you begin to write your clothing companies business plan your channels should be precise and clear as you know any investor wants to know how you plan on making their investment back three times over. There are many outlets for selling and each reach a different consumer that is willing to buy garments within a certain price range. Let’s discuss some of the more common ways and also new forms of selling online.

  • Mail Order Catalog-Not as popular as it once was, but still a powerful method. You don’t have to venture out by yourself with this contact large mail order companies like http://www.eastbay.com. Many store buyers place orders for their stores through catalog’s of clothing lines.
  • Internet Storefront-You can develop your own website and setup a store front, while easily accepting orders through Paypal.
  • Ebay-As you know Ebay isn’t all about the auction. I started out selling t-shirts on Ebay, which you can also do by using the “Buy Now” option instead of having consumers bid. It introduces your brand to thousands of potential customers with the click of a button. Just have a well designed professional store front and building up trust with your customers seems to be the key to online success for clothing shops.
  • GRASSROOTS-I’m pretty sure any entrepreneur starting out has sold shirts hand to hand at events and public outings.
  • Showrooms-Having well known showrooms house your clothing brand while selling to clients that already have trust in the clothing lines that the showroom carry. I wrote about showrooms in a article titled “Who should sell my line”
  • Trade Shows-I’m pretty sure your familiar with this concept, because it’s the most common way of selling your clothing line. Make sure you understand the season that is showing and the overall rundown of the show. I have articles on all of the major trade shows with links to the site and more. Trade Shows you can attend

Since this post is probably going to be a long one and I am going to break it up into a series…Part 1, & Part 2….possibly 3!

Later for Part 2….
