I learned a new sewing technique…well at least the definition of it. Ruching which is a technique where fabric or ribbon is gathered in a repeat pattern to form scallops or petals. Most likely this technique is used on women’s fashion or on juniors clothing not men! Unless you like scallops or petals bunched up on the side of your t-shirts or button downs. It is very time consuming and is now starting to resurface in current fashion trends in some urban and street wear fashions for women according to the Drjays blog.

  1. Thom Stilton Says:

Ruching has never disappeared and has always been found somewhere in fashion, year to year. Did DrJay say it disappeared ? Did this guy go to design school ?. If he wanted to do a dialogue on ruching he would have described the various degrees that a garment can be ruched.

Admitedly, ruching is found primarily on woman’s apparel, although it has found it’s way into men’s wardrobes from time to time.Remember those funky powder blue Huggy Bear tuxedos with the ruffled shirt fronts. Dude, that was a form of ruching. Same method, different direction.

Most of the ruching we see is horizontal, on tops, dresses, tees. You might see a designer using it occasionally on a bottom. Perhaps a pant leg . Used frequently on skirts. Can be done by hand or machine ,but most larger outfits do it mechanically.
